Plans start at $40/month per smartphone for unlimited voice/text plus $50 for shared data

AT&T and Verizon Wireless have been talking up the idea of shared data family plans for months. Today, however, Verizon Wireless is finally taking the step of announcing its plans to the public.
Under the Share Everything Plan, owners of basic feature phones will pay a base "Monthly Line Access" rate of $30/month per device while smartphone users will pay $40/month per device. Adding USB wireless modems, notebooks, or netbooks will run you $20/month per device and adding a tablet will cost you just $10/month per device. From there, customers can add a minimum of 1GB of shared data between devices for an additional $50/month. The Share Everything Plan tops out at $100 for 10GB of shared data.
Under the Share Everything Plan, all lines have unlimited minutes and unlimited texting (standard/picture/video). So for a family that has three smartphones and wants to share 6GB of data, the total monthly service charges would be $200 ($40 access fee per smartphone and $80 for shared data) before any taxes and additional service charges.

"When developing these plans, we first asked customers what they wanted in a wireless service plan.  We also looked at the technology and how customers were using it to manage their lives.  And last, we took into consideration the evolution of the technology and how customers would use wireless in the future," Erwin added.  "Share Everything Plans are the outcome of that research.  They cover every device Verizon Wireless offers, from basic phones to smartphones, from tablets to Jetpacks and more.  Share Everything Plans represent a tremendous shift in how customers think about wireless service."
The new Share Everything Plan from Verizon Wireless will be available starting June 28.

The base costs per devices aren't bad. But $50 for 1GB of data to share amongst devices? That's a bit ridiculous. Why should data be drastically more expensive just because its shared?

Think of it this way. 3 data plans for $29.99/mo and getting 2GB each = about $90. The 6GB plan is $60. A savings of $30/mo. And it is shared too, allowing a potentially lower data tier.

I think you're not including the cost of attaching phones to the account.

Old: 3 data plans for $30/mo + 3 phones for $10/mo = $120.
New: 1 data plan for $60/mo + 3 phones for $30/mo = $150.

VZW is screwing over its users by charging for both tiered data and per device.

Seems to me if I buy 1Gb of data, I should be able to share it across any number of devices for a nominal fee; if I buy unlimited data, then I should pay per device.

Under the Share Everything Plan, all lines have unlimited minutes and unlimited texting (standard/picture/video).

Your old plan cost doesn't include actual phone usage. So the new plan would be cheaper...

Correct... Unlimited Text and Talk is $89.99.

It might be cheaper to go with individual plans, or maybe they will offer a 1000 minute plan with lower per phone cost. Data should be able to be shared similar to minutes without a $40 per phone premium.

For smart phones the latter number would be $180/month since those are $40/month each.

Not to mention that the old plan gives you a total of 6GB of data, 2 GB per phone. The new plan gives you a 2GB total that is shared. Wow, what a bargain !!! </sarcasm>

No, all of those old charges go away when you move to this new plan. You pay per device ($40 smartphone, $30 feature phone, $20 aircard, $10 tablet) and you pay for your data pool ($50 for 1GB, $60 for 2GB and an additional $10 for every 2GB after that). And that is all you pay. The voice devices get unlimited voice and text and there are no separate data charges for the tablets or aircards.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Starting 1GB at $50 ??? If 2GB for a single device is $30, that's $15 per GB. So, it's more than 3 times that cost just to share it. WTF ???

But you get 10GB for $100, which is $10/GB.
That would mean there is a break even point, plus you get the benefit of shared data between phones.

I was hoping when these plans came out I would be able to downgrade my contract. I use about 20 minutes a month, and about 40 texts. This plan is obviously not for me, or my friends/family.

About the only way for this not to be a good deal is if you have two smartphones and you currently have no text plans and have the lowest number of minutes. You would end up paying more and getting unlimited voice and text which you might not use. If you already talk and text a lot this is an excellent deal.

Oh, and if you are using 15GB a month and you still have an unlimited plan. Cling to that if you want, but device replacement will be expensive.

Doing the math for my parents plan, its possibly cheaper.

2 smartphones + 1 feature phone = $110. Plus they'd need at least 4GB of data. $180. They also have an air card. $200.

Taxes and fees in Florida are about 30%. So that makes about $260. Their last bill was almost $300. But their bill also seems to fluctuate a bit (my brother who's still on their plan probably goes over or buys things sometimes).

But currently they also have 4GB/mo per phone and 2GB for the air card.
