Virgin Mobile iPhones are not cheap

The basic iPhone Beyond Talk unlimited data plan is $35 monthly with a $5 monthly discount for people that register for automatic payments with a credit card or PayPal account. Virgin Mobile will also allow the iPhone to be used as a mobile hotspot for an additional $15 monthly.

“This month marks Virgin Mobile USA’s tenth birthday,” said Sir Richard Branson, founder of Virgin Group. “And what better way to thank our fans for ten years of loyalty than by giving them exactly what they want: the perfect plan for the perfect phone. That is the essence of ‘A Higher Calling.’”

Outrageous

If it costs $139 for an ipod touch 4th gen (saw it on slickdeals a few days ago), then why the hell does it cost $500 more for an ipod touch with $10 more battery and maybe $30 worth of Transceivers and related circuitry??? Where the hell do they get off charging over $400 beyond the cost of the parts? And who the hell is dumb enough to fork over that kind of money when you could just buy a $50 phone that does pretty much the same thing. iPhone might have a smoother interface than say a $50 castrated Optimus, but there is no way that is worth $500. An economy built on such consumer stupidity is headed stright for disaster.

"It's okay. The scenarios aren't that clear. But it's good looking. [Steve Jobs] does good design, and [the iPad] is absolutely a good example of that." -- Bill Gates on the Apple iPad
