US Cellular also gets in on the Galaxy S III action

If you're one of the many smartphone fans that have been waiting in anticipation for the Samsung Galaxy S III smartphones to land in the United States, it will be coming this month with some specifications that are a bit changed from the first time we talked about the smartphone.

Samsung has announced that the smartphone will be coming on all four major service providers in the United States. That means no matter if you're on AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, or Verizon, you will be able to get the smartphone starting this month. Even US Cellular customers are shown some love by Samsung. The phone will launch at $199 for the 16GB model and $249 for the 32GB model on all carriers June 21^st.

“The U.S. launch of the Galaxy S III is the most anticipated launch of the year. As promised, we are delivering the ‘next big thing’ for U.S. customers and across all major carriers,” said Dale Sohn, president of Samsung Telecommunications America. “Galaxy S III introduces new technological innovation and takes sharing to the next level.”

The S III boasts a 4.8-inch display with a thin bezel for maximum viewable area. The phone weighs 4.7 ounces and is 8.6 mm thick. The device supports 4G LTE connectivity for fast data and file transfers -- that is assuming the buyer is in an LTE covered area.

The S III introduces the next version of Samsung's content sharing service called AllShare Play. This technology allows the smartphone to automatically recognize other Samsung devices on the user's home network and remotely access files on those other devices. A Wi-Fi network is required for that feature to operate. The smartphone also supports easy sharing for images and uses S-Beam technology to directly share large files such as video and photographs between compatible devices.

The mobile phone runs the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system and has Samsung's TouchWiz user interface. The phone runs a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 1.5GHz dual core processor (Samsung announced a 1.4GHz quad-core Exynos SOC for world markets) with 2 GB of RAM. The Galaxy S III will be offered in marble white or pebble blue colors.

It is an industry first to see five major carriers align behind the launch of a single device virtually simultaneously,” said Todd Pendleton, Chief Marketing Officer for Samsung Telecommunications America. “To support the immense excitement for the Galaxy S III we will execute our biggest marketing campaign ever. Consumers won’t be able to miss why this device is the must-have smartphone.”

For the dull masses, there's the iPhone.
For the tech savvy, there's the jailbroken iPhone.

All Apple needs is to make an iphone with a larger screen and open up notification center to 3rd party apps, and the option to enable it by default and it's all set.

That's not quite all they need.

Removable battery, Qwerty keyboard, larger screen (larger than the expected 4 inch iPhone 5) 4G , open apps, open vendors, update the UI, and heres a nive one MICRO USB for fart sakes!

There are many factors involved in a smartphone purchase: self-identify, peer-identity, features and functions, look and feel, etc.

Apple has done a brilliant job on the iPhone. It's also easy to use, works well and has a great software selection. There's no question it's a great device. Apple's marketing also places it in the mind of consumers as a premium device.

I've owned two Android phones in the past 1.5 years and, to me, Android just really began to get competitive with Gingerbread. The delay of ICS was a good thing for Android since it allowed manufacturers and developers to have a longer term, stable platform to code for. With the mid-later versions of Gingerbread, manufacturers could finally ship devices that were as stable as an iPhone. App selection dramatically improved and Google kept building out a great ecosystem.

Since the Galaxy S2 release, people using iPhones really started to see what can be done with Android and that it can also offer a great experience that trumps the iPhone in many ways. I still have iPhone users look at my GS2, ooh and ahh over it, and really start to think about what they want in their next smartphone.

What does the Galaxy S2 have over a jailbroken iphone 4S besides a larger screen? What can you do on it that you can't do on the iphone? I'm really curious.

The screen is a big deal, it makes everything better... but here is one thing... It can plug into a micro USB charger. You know, the standardized charger that every phone on Earth built in the past 3 years uses (except the iPhone).

So it's just the screen then? Micro USB is a non-issue as someone with an iphone will usually have an ipod or an ipad as well, all using the same charger. Not to mention ipod cables cost 1-2 dollars max.
So when the next iphone is out with a larger screen, there won't be any advantage over it?

I would imagine not. Its just preference. Android has more options as a platform, qwerty kb's larger screens, removable batteries. If you look at Android 4 vs. IOS 5, IOS is looking pretty old and dated, but its mostly just cosmetic, and IOS6 remains to be seen. They all do the same stuff for the most part, just buy what you like and in true Anandtech/Dailytech fashion, insult all others that bought different products than you!!! ;)

I think this is exactly right. It's the variety of hardware which is selling Android, not hardware superiority or Android superiority.

For people with budget constraints or a niche requirement (eg Qwerty or large screen) - it is the only realistic option. They tend to buy it for that, rather than because it's Android.

Regarding removable batteries, if you're prepared to carry a spare battery round you can carry round a portable charging kit which is smaller and achieves the same result.

Oh thank you so much for chiming in with your biased drivel and all encompassing opinion on how Apple is always better except for the sorry few that buy android (the majortiy of people BTW).

And to hell with people that travel alot to places that may or may not have an electrical outlet readily available while on the go.

You are all over every smartphone article on this board spouting your disinformation... As much as you think it's your duty to defend every move Apple makes and every product they create, I think its my duty to call you on your twisited words. The fact is your debate skills are far FAR greater than the platform you champion.

If you can just once, do these 4 things I could begin to take you seriously... Say something truthful and negative about Apples business practices. Are you referring to my suggestion of a portable charger which requires no electrical outlet and is the same size as a replacement battery?

That's not all they need? All they need for what? Apple makes more money per phone (profit) than Samsung or any phone manufacturer. So as company who has over $100B in cash why would they need what you are talking about? As far as I know they have everything they need. Now as far as what you need - then yes, removeable battery qwerty keyboard etc etc.. Since you need all these things definitely pick an android phone or bb phone.

The way I see it its pointless to argue with others whats best and what isnt. Its all in the eye of the beholder. What you might consider a beautiful girl (Android and its fragmented OS) can just be a Fat chick to me...That is all, Thank you lol.

Calm down man, read the thread you are replying too. It was in a context of tech savvy users. The conversation was about Apple doing a great job at making things seamless and easy and for non-tech savvy users, its great. Most tech savvy users prefer Android because of its flexibility. Need for what? To be preferred by tech savvy users.

Hey.. Yea I definitely didnt see that context.. But yes in the sense of the tech savvy user I would say you are right. The Iphone is for the people who cant be bothered about the techy stuff which i think is the general user. I still think its good for even techy types though if they jailbreak it which im sure they will do.

It's like the guys in here believe complexity is a good thing.

It's like going to buy a new Ferrari, and saying 'oh, anyone can drive that car. I therefore don't like it'.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, a smartphone is a means to an end, whether that end is communication, web browsing, taking pictures or apps, and complexity adds nothing to this. Simplicity in all systems is king, provided functionality isn't impaired. If you're a true tech guy, you can do anything you want on iOS that you can on Android, and it's a more pleasant more usable experience.
