eyestrain is a result of your refresh rate being too low, your sizing being too small, or both. if you don't know how to increase displayed font size/icon size, then you probably aren't smart enough to use a computer anyways.
let the large-format readers-digest reading freaks use a lower, non-native display setting. the rest of us in the REAL WORLD want high resolution--and the higher the better. personally, if i could get a 10MP picture on my laptop, i'd do it. i guarantee i won't have problems reading or develop eyestrain because of it.

Hey wise guy, Mr. know-it-all, changing font-size and icon size doesn't make everything look alright. There's a reason why OS developers are working on Resolution Independence. Yea, the REAL WORLD.
I guarantee your desktop will look like shit. Why do you think people complain that they can't see shit out of their Hi-Res laptops? Are they all that stupid?
If I give you a 10MP laptop with 96dpi icons and crappy fonts, you'll wish you return your laptop back ASAP. And oh, you crappy IGP will not able to handle 10MP because your display memory is shit and forget about external monitor option.
You obvious haven't used a Hi-Res screen because I have and I have done everything you mentioned above. Windows XP will look like CRAP. Don't take my word for it, do it yourself.
Win7 looks better, but not ideal. It's a simple fact based on empirical evidence and general consensus amongst many credible sources.
If you are closed minded and judgemental, maybe you can learn a thing or two. Bring your ego down from a 10 down to a 2, and listen to what others have to say.
