A 16 GB original iPad prototype with two dock connectors was up for bidding on eBay yesterday with a starting bid of $4,800
Just before the iPad's initial release in 2010, there was a rumor that Apple had created an iPad with a second dock connector for landscape mode in addition to the normal version with a single dock connector designed for portrait mode. However, Apple ultimately decided to stick with the single dock connector for simplicity.
Fast forward to present day and a 16 GB original iPad prototype with two dock connectors wound up on eBay yesterday with a starting bid of $4,800. The rear shell shows a dock connector for portrait mode and one for landscape orientation.
According to MacRumors, this prototype is the real deal. It was made by Apple back when patent applications filed on the design showed a version with two dock connectors.
The device reportedly has components with early Apple part numbers and copyright dates, comparable to the corresponding components on the original iPad released with a single dock connector. The dual dock connector prototype is also running Apple's SwitchBoard diagnostic software, and has a prototype identification number in many locations on the front bezel and rear shell.
The eBay listing noted that the prototype is not entirely functional, with some repairs required for the touch sensing capabilities.
The iPad prototype ended up selling for $10,200.
