The latest installment in the Diablo game series has become the fastest selling PC game in history

Blizzard Entertainment today proudly announced that the Diablo III video game racked up 3.5 million units sold in the first 24 hours, and added to that tally through the first week.

After the first week, more than 6.3 million gamers are now playing Diablo III, still excluding Korean gamers playing Diablo III at Internet cafes.  That number also doesn't include 1.2M gamers that received Diablo III for free when they signed up for a one-year subscription to World of Warcraft.

Meanwhile, Diablo III sales are expected to creep up in the weeks to come, as casual RPG gamers enter the mix.

"We're definitely thrilled that so many people around the world were excited to pick up their copy of Diablo III and jump in the moment it went live," said Mike Morhaime, Blizzard CEO and co-founder, in a press statement. "We also regret that our preparations were not enough to ensure everyone had a seamless experience when they did so. I want to reaffirm our commitment to make sure the millions of Diablo III players out there have a great experience with the game moving forward, and I also want to thank them for their ongoing support."

More than 8,000 retailers worldwide offered the game in North America, Europe, South Korea, Australia, and other parts of the world -- and digital downloads were available in the same markets, plus a handful of other locations.

The Diablo game trilogy, plus expansions and later modifications, have proven to be some of the most popular RPG video games ever.  Diablo II launched in the summer of 2000, and generated 4M units sold in the first year.

Everything seems to be looking up for Blizzard, even though there are early reports of game account theft and related problems. Since Diablo III has a feature such as the real money auction house, so players can earn real money, and now there is a question of account theft and fraud. Forbes recently published an article related to Diablo III hacking, and whether people have traditionally been prosecuted for digital game theft.

Blizzard can look forward to other problems popping up here and there, but with the support of millions of gamers, should be able to handle any bumps in the road.

Online garbage

I'll PAY for this game when it's in a bargain bin for $10. I have no need for online play or dealing with the need to be online just to play my game.

You don't get more than $30 from me without the game lasting more than 40hrs single player. I cringe every time they try to get $60 from me for 10 hours of fun. I'm pretty sure if we checked, 90% of the games before 2000 were over 40hrs each (we wouldn't touch a game back then that wasn't giving this much game time, random dungeons, random maps, or something that gives you a reason to replay it at least one more time). Piracy exists because these people keep tying to give us LESS for a constantly rising PRICE! They used to be $30-40, come with manuals, cloth maps, clue books (or a well written story in some cases, totally separate book in edition to manuals), 60-100hrs of play and a fancy box to boot. This wasn't a collectors edition back then either. Just the way all games came. Now none of that now though. All of it is gone, they charge $60 and it lasts 12.5hrs at best usually. If Blizzard hits the skids will this game still work in 5 years? etc?

Any company that treats me like a criminal will be greeted with the same treatment right back. My love of Blizzard games goes right out the window with forced online garbage for a largely single player game.

Thanks to Gamecopyworld and Skidrow etc you can play now...LOL. I sold your stock too...I don't see that going anywhere soon either. This is a turn down EA's path and will suck the life out of your stock price eventually.

Let me know when you stop making me pay for protections, stop forcing internet connections, and just let me play the game (RMAH almost makes me forgo the $10 at a later date too...That's just criminal - no reason to play a game when you can buy anything you want - why grind to earn it? And the nerve of you to take a fee from every transaction between players). It should be simple to exclude ALL items from offline play from getting into online without needing online perm connections.

You honestly don't believe you stop anyone who really wants the game without paying right? They have NO intention of paying you EVER. Why try so hard to stop so few from ripping you off especially with all the problems you cause your paying customers. You aren't really that dumb are you? A key is all that's needed to stop honest people (who need that key to play online). The rest of the crap just makes a person hit nfohump (to find the groups release), binsearch to find it (nzb it), alt.binz to get it, gamecopyworld to find which patch I need to match to the KRACK (yes I know misspelled don't want filter) that gamecopyworld has as it's latest release. Go to game company (or any patch site) and download matching version to gamecopyworld. Install, patch, copy krack over installed patched version and no protection. Keep old original version (rename before copy over) so you can put it back to patch an update again and gamecopyworld again to fix later. You really stop NOBODY. Not even from updating the game as every new patch comes out. You cause the PIRATE an extra 15 minutes of work and that's about it.

Don't give me that console has less piracy crap either. You can buy any of them modified already for an extra $75 and burn dvd's off the web all day long. I can buy an xbox 360 today, with no hacking skills at all and have 100 games by this weekend. No need to ever buy a game. I think it's easier on consoles. One fix (done by someone else even), and its free games forever. The most you need is a firmware flasher to keep up with WAVES etc. Fortunately consoles are about to die. The next revs will be unsuccessful. When a phone can put the same graphics on the screen as a console, and use gamepads (NVDA already has xbox/pc gamepad support on tegra3, everyone else will follow) there's no point in a console that stays the same for 10 years holding gaming back.

I pay for all my games (eventually, usually gold editions all patched, protection long removed by the company and usually $5-10 in JC at EB Games etc). But not until they're worth what I believe they should have sold it for to begin with, or less if DRM just ticked me off. Note, games like Wizardry 8, HOMM, Warlords got my full price, with no need for newsgroups etc :) (because of the replay-ability) Here's hoping the big companies (EA, Blizzard etc) all die, and are replaced by people making games like Legend of Grimrock. I'm not saying I like the game or not (I do), but just that 4 guys made a damn good game that I think they should have charged $20 for instead of $14. Decent graphics and more game play (hours) than a lot of $60 triple A titles these days. Why do games cost 20-40mil to make and only last 10hrs today (some guy beat D3 in 12.5 hours on day 1, even posted his stats - TOO SHORT for $60!)? They used to make games with teams that were not much bigger than Grimrock sized and they lasted for 60-100hrs and most had a good reason to pull out and play again over an over. I've never played WOW either (but thought it would improve their stock...LOL $12 forever).
