Apple dominates tablet market

The latest numbers are in from NPD DisplaySearch looking at the mobile PC share and shipments for Q1 2012. According to the numbers, Apple shipped nearly 17.2 million mobile PCs in Q1 racking up 118% year-over-year growth. The big seller for Apple that pushed it to such high numbers is the iPad. DisplaySearch found that nearly 80% of Apple's mobile PC shipments were the iPad.
 
Apple's ever-popular tablet shipped over 13.6 million units alone in Q1 of 2012 for 162% year-over-year growth. The overall market shipped 76.2 million mobile PCs during Q1, for a seasonal drop of 15% compared to Q4 2011. Shipments grew 30% year-over-year showing that the mobile computer market is making a comeback after the economic turmoil 2011. 
 
Tablet PCs grew 124% year-over-year with notebooks and mini notebooks growing 12%. The tablet PC growth is absolutely fueled by the Apple iPad. Breaking down the numbers based on region, China was largest market for growth quarter over quarter.
 
"The China region had sequential quarter shipment growth, achieving 13% for mobile PCs overall, 12% for notebook and mini-note PCs, and 16% for tablet PCs," said Richard Shim, NPD DisplaySearch Senior Analyst. "This is noteworthy given the sequential declines in all other regions as well as the declines in other product categories including TVs and monitors."
 
Apple's iPad allowed the company to reach 22.5% of the overall mobile PC market for the quarter, nearly twice HP's share. The other top five brands for the quarter relied on notebooks for their market share. HP was second largest shipping 8.9 million units for 11.6% of the market. Acer took the third spot with 6.9 million units shipped for 9% of the market. Lenovo had the fourth place spot with 5.9 million units shipped and 7.7% of the market followed closely by Dell in fifth place with 5.6 million units shipped and 7.3% of the mobile PC market.
 
The numbers look very different if you take tablets out of the figures with HP coming in first for notebooks and mini notebook shipments with 8.9 million units moved and 16.2% of the market. Acer was in 3rd place, Lenovo was in third, Dell was in fourth place, and Asus was in fifth place.

Apple macbooks

So where do the Apple Macbooks stand in terms of sales? I had never seen a MacBook Air up close until last week, when co-worker whipped out an 11" he recently bought. I have to admit, it is way nicer than any PC laptop I've ever come across. It's good to see that ultrabooks are finally catching up (except for the 16:9 crappy screens).

You can derive it from the figures above. Apple shipped 17.2 million tablets + laptops in 2012 Q1. 13.6 million were iPads, which leaves 3.6 million Macbooks. (I still disagree with counting tablets as PCs. Aside from the browser and media player, they can't run the same software, so are different markets IMHO. There's a high probability a tablet owner will also own a PC, likely a laptop.)

HP was 8.9 million laptops, or 16.2% of the laptop market (no tablets). So 3.6 million Macbooks would be 6.6% of the laptop market. That is surprisingly bad. Back around 2006-2008 they were up around 12% of the laptop market if I remember right.

Another figure you can derive is tablet market share. If 8.9 million laptops is 16.2% of the total, then the laptop market is 54.9 million units. Laptop + tablet is 76.2 million units, so tablets are 21.3 million. iPads are 13.6 million of those, so iPads have 63.8% of the tablet market. That would be a substantial decline from the ~75% iPads enjoyed a few months ago.

Basically, the numbers highlighted in the report seem to be combined and cherry picked to appear most favorable for Apple. If those figures are correct, the underlying story (assuming I've done my math right) is that Apple is losing tablet market share, and is losing laptop market share. My guess as to what's going on is that iPads are cannibalizing laptop sales, but they're cannibalizing Macbook laptop sales disproportionately.

Bear in mind the 11" MBA is a $1000 laptop. Aside from size, it is nowhere near as good as other $1000 PC laptops I've seen.

Aesthetically it's a very nice package. But Apple compromised too much in favor of aesthetics and cut out too many ports IMHO. You get 2 USB ports, a headphone jack, power port, and one mini-displayport (need an adapter to hook it up to a monitor/projector). The 13" model adds a SD card reader. Newer models will mitigate this somewhat with a thunderbolt port which you can break out into other ports. But you'll still be lugging around a half dozen adapters in addition to the power brick compared to a laptop with the ports built-in.

The 11.6" model in particular uses a poor screen. Better than a cheap PC laptop's, but significantly worse viewing angles than the screen in the regular Macbooks. It is not a screen worthy of a $1000 computer IMHO (though to be fair a large number of $1000 PC laptops have sucky screens as well). I haven't seen the 13" MBA's screen so can't comment on that.

Add in the other Apple lock-ins (sealed battery, memory soldered on, proprietary SSD modules), and I would be very wary of getting a MBA unless it's exactly what you want. There is basically zero upgradability and expandability. Don't get me wrong, it's a very nice package if suits your needs, and I have recommended them to clients on occasion. But the good looks tend to draw people in and make them overlook the hidden warts.
