Likely ill-fated voyage never left the dock

Did Oracle Corp. (ORCL) feel like it could be king of the smartphone world?

Reuters is reporting that Oracle CEO Larry Ellison testified that his firm considered buying the remains of Canadian phonemaker Research in Motion, Ltd. (TSE:RIM) and dead Californian phonemaker Palm (a shuttered subsidiary of Hewlett-Packard, Comp. (HPQ)) in a bid to form a massive vessel to house the IT giant's budding smartphone ambitions and sail the mobile seas.

While Oracle may have considered RIM-Palm an attractive proposition and while HP and RIM might have viewed Oracle as their knight in shining armor, numerous icebergs would have loomed if this voyage came to fruition.

Aside from the fact that Oracle would be setting sail into waters ruled by veterans Google, Inc. (GOOG) and Apple, Inc. (AAPL), it would also be doing so with two firms who were rejected by consumers and left for dead.

Some might call this romance madness, but Mr. Ellison testified that his firm seriously considered making a life with the RIM-Palm, but that critical market research sunk the dream.  Instead, Oracle's heart will go on, as it tries to scuttle Google's Android operating system in court on grounds of intellectual property infringement.

In that regard, Oracle could hitch a profits joy-ride aboard Google's wildly successful Android operating system.  Oracle shouldn't count its smartphone dollars before they hatch, though, as Google isn't about ready to succumb to it in court.  The pair will continue their bitter legal dance in weeks ahead.

RE: Jason Mick is OBSESSED with RIM

You are correct, I did create an ID specifically for calling Jason to the carpet. I've been reading Dailytech for a few years now. I spoke up in an attempt to turn back the tide of Jason's increasingly horrible "blog" posts. If that makes me an "angry little puke" then so be it. Far be it from me to expect to see some articles with some substance, not just unsubstantiated babble from someone who obviously can't write about any other topic.

My issue with this article in particular was this: It was the third RIM-bashing article of the day. Of the DAY! Yes it was somewhat RIM-related because of Oracle saying they thought about buying them, but by the second paragraph its back to the same old nonsense from Jason. Back to "because I said RIM is dead, they are dead, and Oracle would have been dumb to buy them cause I'm Jason F'n Mick and I say RIM has already failed". Its not even journalism. It's self-fulfilling prophesy where Jason takes a fact and twists it to suit the reality he is trying to create. Honestly not sure why other Dailytechers put up with it. I chose not to. Thus the new account and the posts.

For the record, I thought about making an account to say something after the HTC article, but I decided against it. The Oracle article pushed it over the edge.

DT is full of dumb anti-RIM and anti-Apple trolls, get used to it. No point in arguing with them, and Mick is just one of those trolls. Move along people.

You aren't kidding. Look at Retrospooty's post below. People actually expect this type of journalism now and accept it as the norm. So sad. Wonder what would happen if they had to think for themselves rather than being spoon-fed what to think...

Dont make assumptions that other thinking differently than you aren't thinking. This is a tech site, not a national news site. RIM's failure is tech news. I don't need Jason or anyone else's article to tell me what to think about RIM. Anyone with half a brain can see whats going on there. Its just a topic when a huge industry leader fiddles for years and then starts fading away.

Look back over the posts I've made so far today. At no time have I actually defended RIM or said that they weren't in trouble. Yes, this is news, especially for a tech site. I'm in no way saying that Jason (or any other tech writer for that matter) should ignore RIM's issues or give them a free pass. Whether or not you are a RIM fan has little to nothing to do with my complaints about Jason, and I have no problem whatsoever with people having varying opinions on matters (RIM's future in this case).

What I DO have a problem with is Jason's attempts to pass off his opinions as proven fact, and doing it over and over again. I already used this example, but in this article, Jason says that RIM has been left for dead and is defunct in the same way Palm is. His OPINION may be that this will happen eventually, and he may be right, but he is not only passing it off as a fact in this article, he's using in the past tense. He's so clairvoyant that his predictions are already true and therefore he can actually speak about them as if they already happened.

You say you can think for yourself. I have no doubts than you can. But how can someone who can think for themselves not take Jason (or any other tech writer) to task over such blatant attempts to spoon feed his views onto his readers, even if you happen to agree with his "predictions"?

"Jason says that RIM has been left for dead and is defunct in the same way Palm is. "

You are taking it way too literal. Read it again. He said "it would also be doing so with two firms who were rejected by consumers and left for dead."

In a very real sense this is true. RIM's part of the consumer market is virtually gone, and its in an industry that is growing like crazy. HE isnt literally saying the company is dead as if its a fact. Relax man.

We will have to agree to disagree on this one. I feel like that's exactly what he is saying. He believes its already happened, so he reports it as fact. It's irresponsible.

Then dont read them if you dont like them. I dont see any "bashing" at all. He is talking about the deep hole they put themselves in by not innovating at all over the past 5+ years. THat is a fact, not a bash. They are in deep trouble and wont likely last the year as an independent company. That is tech news. Maybe a bit overkill, but smartphones are where its at these days and RIM so pathetically dropped the ball that people talk about it. Its all over the web, not just here.
