Toshiba adds more screen sizes to Excite tablet line
Toshiba has expanded its line of Excite Android tablets to include three new screen sizes. The new tablets have 13.3-inch, 10.1-inch, and 7.7-inch screens. The names of the tablets, predictably, are the Excite 10, Excite 13, and Excite 7.7. The tablets all have some common features including aluminum bodies and scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass displays. The tablets also all run Android 4.0 for the operating system.
“One size does not fit all, so we are carefully considering how and where people are using tablets and designing form factors to best suit various needs,” said Carl Pinto, vice president of product development, Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc., Digital Products Division. “With amazingly thin and light designs, our new Excite family of tablets continues to incorporate what consumers have come to love about Toshiba tablets: essential ports for a more complete tablet computing experience plus durability that ensures they can go the distance.”
The new tablets use an NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor, which are quad-core CPUs with an additional fifth core for low-power operations. Toshiba gives each of the three new tablets a five-megapixel rear camera and a two-megapixel front camera. The tablets also have integrated Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and stereo speakers.
The Excite 10 has an LED backlit screen with a resolution of 1280 x 800 and supports up to 10 points of touch at the same time. The 10-inch tablet is 0.35-inch thick, weighs 1.32 pounds, and promises 10 hours of battery life. It includes 1 GB of RAM and has integrated micro USB, micro HDMI, and a SD card slot.
The Excite 13 measures 13.3-inches diagonally and has a resolution of 1600 x 900. It has four speakers for better sound and 1 GB of memory. It promises up to 13 hours of battery life.
The Excite 7.7 uses an AMOLED display and has 1 GB of memory. The tablet is 0.3-inch thick and weighs 13.4 ounces.
All of the tablets can access Google Play and run the full array of Android apps that are available. The Excite 10 will launch in May with a 16 GB version for $449.99, 32 GB version for $529.99, and 64 GB version for $649.99. The Excite 7.7 will launch in June with a 16 GB version for $499.99 and 32 GB version for $579.99. The Excite 13 will also launch in June with a 32 GB version for $649.99 and 64 GB version for $749.99.

I don't get it...

The 7.7 inch version is $499.99? And the 10 inch tablet is $449.99?
I'm also concerned about the viability of a 13.3" tablet in the market. I have no desire for a tablet that large. Any tablet that large is going to be too heavy for me to use comfortably on a regular basis. I'm not a small chap either, 6'1" and 195 lbs., but I find the iPad to be "just right" for this bear.
Maybe someone who's 6'6" or so would have no problems holding that thing up constantly, but by the time we reach 13.3 inches, with a 13 hour battery life, I'm thinking that'll be at least 2.25 lbs, maybe as heavy as 3 lbs. consider the battery life. The iPad 1/2/3 all weigh about 1.5, and that seems to be the sweet spot for most.
I'm also not at all enthused by the resolution. The iPad 3 is the tablet to beat, and that most certainly includes its resolution. If anyone intends to be competitive in the marketplace in the future, they need to be at least as good as an iPad 3. Android is already severely behind, and frankly with price points remaining the same as iPads, I don't see how they're going to woo anyone over.
I'm still waiting for a 2048 x 1536 or better 10" Android tablet, not to mention actual productivity scenarios. I look at a tablet and I realize that it does nothing that my ASUS Ultrabook won't do, and my Ultrabook probably does it a lot faster.
Tablets are still toys for the average user. Granted, they are interesting toys, and a few markets can now use tablets effectively (radiology departments and the iPad 3 are probably a good fit because of its resolution), but by and large, I just don't "get it" yet.
If the mission is to be "cool", then I guess mission accomplished, in a pathetic $499 to $829 way, since you could go to the gym and get a haircut and some new wardrobe items for that and be legitimately cooler... but what do I know... I actually have to get shit done with my devices.

I don't know about you but when I use my tablet, it's not while standing up for long periods of time. It's usually when I'm sitting down or I have it set up in it's stand on a counter or table. And if I'm laying down, I sometimes put a small pillow on my chest and hold it up on that. So weight isn't too much of an issue. I also don't use it for hours at a time since I prefer reading from books than from tablets. Just doesn't "feel" the same as books.

Unless you are a Toshiba shareholder (and hence have a financial interest), why would you be concerned by this?
