Apparently the 2GB size won't be so important an issue until game developers start shipping 64-bit applications. I'm not worried about its longevity, by the time it really matters (2014?) I'll be on to my next card.

That was my thought as well. The current card I have handles Skyrim on high with just about every high resolution pack out their and it only has 1GB of memory. So I'm thinking doubling the amount will get me by for the next 2 years.

Wha I have several Skyrim mods that seem to use > 1GB vram plus unmodded games like BF3, Total War, GTAIV, and I also heard AVP uses > 1GB. I was thinking these new AA schemes would dial that back quite a bit.

I'm not sure why you think you need 64bit games.
Now that developers can apply many more textures at one time, thanks to bindless textures, it is much easier to exceed the memory limit on the card. We still need games developers to take advantage of that feature though and they won't do it, because nowadays everybody develops for consoles and only ports to PC.
