Car is expected to come to the US
Porsche is reportedly working on a plug-in hybrid version of its popular Panamera four-door sports sedan. The car is expected as 2014 model and according to a source familiar with Porsche's plans, the car is likely to come to the United States. With the U.S. being one of the largest markets for Porsche, the odds are good that the new car will come here.
Volkswagen owns nearly half of Porsche and is planning on rolling out plug-in hybrid versions of the VW Passat and the Audi Q7 in 2014 or 2015. Rudolf Krebs, VW's group chief officer for electric traction, said last week in an interview, "We are really convinced that the future of hybrids won't be pure hybrids, but the plug-in hybrids."

Another reason these carmakers are looking at unveiling plug-in hybrids in the U.S. is to meet the pending CAFE requirements that significantly increase fuel economy across the carmakers fleet over the coming years. Plug-in hybrids able to travel on electric power alone help offset fuel swilling vehicles that are in the corporate fleets.
Most the hybrids on the U.S. market today do not have plug-in functionality. The typical hybrid has a battery power system, but is only able to charge the batteries while the combustion engine runs and the vehicle is in motion. The plug-in hybrids add the ability to connect the battery packs directly to AC power at home or at a charging station on the go to charge the batteries allowing for a higher electric driving range.
The plug-in hybrid version of the Porsche Panamera won't be the first time we've seen a hybrid from the sports carmaker. In February of 2011, Porsche unveiled the
Panamera S Hybrid
with a $95,000 sticker price. Porsche also has a
of the Panamera is good for 36 miles per gallon.

IME the Panamera looks better in person than in photos.
As far as a hybrid version, that would appeal to the tree huggers with too much money - all three of them.

I also don't understand all this complaints about Panamera's looks. To me it just looks fast and handles great (especially for sizable sedan).
I guess it defines the difference between modern European design and our common American love for all thing UPS track-like (and no hope for change here).
