Walmart to jump the gun on iPad sales

Apple announced yesterday that its retail stores would open early at 8am on Friday morning to accommodate the masses that want to purchase a new iPad and missed out on the pre-order opportunities. In addition to the U.S., potential customers in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, Switzerland and the UK, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands will also have their chance to grab the fresh new tablet.

Apple also made its clear that its U.S. retail partners -- Best Buy, Radio Shack, Sam’s Club, Target -- will also carry the new iPad.

Today, however, Walmart informed us that it would jump the gun on competing stores -- and even Apple stores -- by offering the new iPad at 12:01am on Friday.

"A limited supply of the new iPad will be available at your local 24-hour Walmart," said a Walmart representative in an email to DailyTech. "Other retailers’ doors don’t open until 8 a.m. local time, so you can get to work on time and beat the rush by coming to Walmart."

The company notes that it will have the 16GB Wi-Fi models in both black and white. It doesn't, however, indicate if it will sell the higher-capacity models or models with LTE.

Analysis from Apple's handpicked, "top tier" reviewers has been overwhelmingly positive, but we'll have to wait until the ever-critical consumers get the devices in their hands to see how the tablet crowd feels about the device and its slightly expanded dimensions.

In other iPad news, iFixit has already gotten its hands on the tablet and disassembled it. For those that are into gadget teardowns, head on over to iFixit’s site to seen the new iPad in the buff.

I guess I am still not seeing it. What is the purpose of a $500-800 tablet exactly. To me it seems that its slightly too big to be able to conveniently carry with you, yet just limited in functionality enough to be completely worthless for any worthwhile tasks. Most people I know with the original iPad use it to play games and jerk each other off, so I guess the point of this one is to...play games in slightly higher resolution and jerk each other off? Tablets for cheap, time consuming games are fine, but they are nowhere near pc or console games and I think the cell phone is better for that because its more portable. I can see using a tablet for taking notes (that's what I use mine for)or typing with assuming you have a wireless keyboard, but any tablet can do that. Same with internet. Same with video, any tablet can do that, and whereas the display may be better, where are you getting your high def feeds from to utilize it, maybe I need to upgrade my porn subscription.

You got me there, I am not a PROFESSIONAL, I'm just a lowly qualified nuclear electrician who spent years operating on submarines. I'm in school getting my degree so that I can get commissioned, and for the record I don't drink or smoke pot. Since I started out in poverty and now I am living in the nicest part of town and drive a V-series Cadillac I didn't think the choices I made were too bad. I don't see why I was downrated, I wasn't even trying to bash apple, I was just curious what people actually used them for that justified the effort of getting one as soon as it came out.

As for reading technical documents, when studying nuclear power or electrical diagrams for troubleshooting I found it easier to use the actual books than the digital copies unless I had a mouse available with a printer, and if I had to study on the go my phone was always more than enough, but I guess I also wasn't limited to a 3.5" screen. Douche.

I am with you on that... Not a knock against Apple, just tablets in general. For em there are 2 classes of mobile computing. Those that fit in my pocket, and those that need to be carried.

Smartphones are great because they fit in my pocket and I have both hands free to fend off the ladies ;) LOL j/k

If I am going to have to carry a device around with me, or a case for the device, I want full functionality, not a smartphone OS with a big screen. Espectially when its a $500 device. You can get a great laptop for that price.
