Walmart to jump the gun on iPad sales

Apple announced yesterday that its retail stores would open early at 8am on Friday morning to accommodate the masses that want to purchase a new iPad and missed out on the pre-order opportunities. In addition to the U.S., potential customers in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, Switzerland and the UK, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands will also have their chance to grab the fresh new tablet.

Apple also made its clear that its U.S. retail partners -- Best Buy, Radio Shack, Sam’s Club, Target -- will also carry the new iPad.

Today, however, Walmart informed us that it would jump the gun on competing stores -- and even Apple stores -- by offering the new iPad at 12:01am on Friday.

"A limited supply of the new iPad will be available at your local 24-hour Walmart," said a Walmart representative in an email to DailyTech. "Other retailers’ doors don’t open until 8 a.m. local time, so you can get to work on time and beat the rush by coming to Walmart."

The company notes that it will have the 16GB Wi-Fi models in both black and white. It doesn't, however, indicate if it will sell the higher-capacity models or models with LTE.

Analysis from Apple's handpicked, "top tier" reviewers has been overwhelmingly positive, but we'll have to wait until the ever-critical consumers get the devices in their hands to see how the tablet crowd feels about the device and its slightly expanded dimensions.

In other iPad news, iFixit has already gotten its hands on the tablet and disassembled it. For those that are into gadget teardowns, head on over to iFixit’s site to seen the new iPad in the buff.

I can't wait to buy mine, though i'm camped out outside the apple store to get mine (there's 3 of us here.)

That HD display is gorgeous, can't wait to make some more apps for it. As always i have to thank apple for helping me make $$.

Apple is still the leader everyone is trying to follow. Reviews look great.

As far as the iPad being the leader, that's unquestionable. It is the tablet that everyone strives to compete with. Everyone is trying to make an "iPad killer".

It's sort of how the BMW 3-Series always has been and remains the benchmark for compact, entry-level luxury sedans.

WIth that being said, as for the reviews, I'll wait until Anand gets his hands on one. These first round of reviews typically come from reviewers (Apple's chosen few) that typically have nothing but praise for Apple no matter what they do.

I also find it interesting that Engadget didn't have a review up last night. I wonder if they've been booted from Apple's elite media list.

"Why am I being rated down?"

I'll give you the answer... people read this: " i'm camped out outside the apple store to get mine"

And have quickly determined that you are a loser and a douchebag.

LOL... camping out for an iPad.

Yep - what a total idiot, and a waste of time. It's only a few hundred dollars to have someone else wait in line for you. Sheesh...

"You've determined that he is a loser and a douchebag because he has camping out to buy a product?"

Yes, I have. Its one thing to show up a few mins early to buy something day one, but when you get to the point you are actually camping out, you are a loser and and idiot, along with a no-life buffoon. My god man, get some perspective.

What about people that camp out for concert tickets or college football/basketball tickets (especially rivalry games)?

I can remember my share of camping out for NC State vs Duke or NC State vs UNC tickets :)

For things that sell out, like converts and games its always been a thing that people do to make sure they get tickets... But for a product release to make sure you get it at 8:00am when the store opens as opposed to a bit later is just retarted. Especially with Apple, because Apple is very good with getting product into stores prior to release. FFS, just order one off the internet and wait a day.

Unless they plan on only making a few thousand iPad3's, that's not really the same.

There aren't that many people camping out for iPad's this time as apposed to the iPad2 or iPhone 4S. Most people realize, I think/hope, that it's basically an iPad2 with a huge premium fee for higher resolution.

That why I pre-ordered mine. It's shipped and will be in my hands on Monday. Screw camping outside some retail store, that's what the internet is for!

Exactly. That high res screen alone makes me kind of want one. I am a total gadget whore, and impulse buyer, but no computing device regardless of how awesome it is would be worth waiting in line all night just to get it a few mins, hours or even days earlier than I otherwise would have. I cant imagine having enough free time where wasting an entire night would even be an option.

I think that's why a lot of people preordered, and consequently the lines are easy today. A friend of mine just walked into a Best Buy this morning and got one with no problem.

This is a huge contrast with the iPad 2 and iPhone 4 launches where there were no online pre-orders (stupid) and the result was obnoxious lines where people would have to wait hours and hours to get one.

Screw that noise. At least they did it right this time by having online preorders with the iPad 3 and iPhone 4S.

idk, $500 shouldnt be a lot hopefully for readers on this board, stereotyping a bit that geeks should have good talents that land them decent jobs.

but those bitter people who are too lazy to make it happen prolly get even more upset and just hate on the pricey toys.

droid, apple, doesnt matter what, these are all luxurys. dont/hate/player/game

No he won't.

I no longer do queues if I can avoid them and certainly no over nighters. I used to be largely nocturnal when I was young, I could stay up for days fuelled just by sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll, now sadly it's more a case of 'I fancy a bit of a sit down', 'where's the nearest toilet?', and is it time for for a nap?'. Ageing baby boomers are a sad bunch :)

Seriously, I usually skip version one and then skip a generation before doing a renewal. I got an iPad 2 so nice though the new one looks I will wait until next year before considering a new one.

My prediction is for sales of 75 million iPads in the next year by the way.

I guess I am still not seeing it. What is the purpose of a $500-800 tablet exactly. To me it seems that its slightly too big to be able to conveniently carry with you, yet just limited in functionality enough to be completely worthless for any worthwhile tasks. Most people I know with the original iPad use it to play games and jerk each other off, so I guess the point of this one is to...play games in slightly higher resolution and jerk each other off? Tablets for cheap, time consuming games are fine, but they are nowhere near pc or console games and I think the cell phone is better for that because its more portable. I can see using a tablet for taking notes (that's what I use mine for)or typing with assuming you have a wireless keyboard, but any tablet can do that. Same with internet. Same with video, any tablet can do that, and whereas the display may be better, where are you getting your high def feeds from to utilize it, maybe I need to upgrade my porn subscription.

You got me there, I am not a PROFESSIONAL, I'm just a lowly qualified nuclear electrician who spent years operating on submarines. I'm in school getting my degree so that I can get commissioned, and for the record I don't drink or smoke pot. Since I started out in poverty and now I am living in the nicest part of town and drive a V-series Cadillac I didn't think the choices I made were too bad. I don't see why I was downrated, I wasn't even trying to bash apple, I was just curious what people actually used them for that justified the effort of getting one as soon as it came out.

As for reading technical documents, when studying nuclear power or electrical diagrams for troubleshooting I found it easier to use the actual books than the digital copies unless I had a mouse available with a printer, and if I had to study on the go my phone was always more than enough, but I guess I also wasn't limited to a 3.5" screen. Douche.

I am with you on that... Not a knock against Apple, just tablets in general. For em there are 2 classes of mobile computing. Those that fit in my pocket, and those that need to be carried.

Smartphones are great because they fit in my pocket and I have both hands free to fend off the ladies ;) LOL j/k

If I am going to have to carry a device around with me, or a case for the device, I want full functionality, not a smartphone OS with a big screen. Espectially when its a $500 device. You can get a great laptop for that price.
