Comcast has its own streaming service called Streampix

It looks as if Netflix's plans to join forces with cable companies may be foiled already, as Comcast refuses to offer Netflix on its Xfinity TV service.

Earlier this month, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said it was likely that his video streaming service would end up doing business with cable service providers in the future. He saw this as a smart move, considering the fact that he recognizes HBO's Go on-demand as Netflix's top competitor. Moving in to the cable business would offer cable providers an alternative to HBO Go and put Netflix higher in the ranks.

"It's not in the short term, but it's the natural direction for us in the long term," said Hastings. "Many [cable service providers] would like to have a competitor to HBO, and they would bid us off of HBO."

However, Comcast has already thrown a wrench in Netflix's plans. According to Alana Davis, a Comcast spokeswoman, the cable operator has no intention of working with Netflix or offering it as an on-demand service.

"We have no plans to offer access to Netflix to our customers through our Xfinity TV service, no matter what device," said Davis.

This is a pretty big blow to Netflix, considering Comcast is the country's largest cable company with 22.3 million Xfinity subscribers. Also, Comcast already offers a service similar to Netflix called Streampix, which eliminates the need for Netflix's service. Comcast's service is also $4.99 per month as part of a cable package while Netflix's service starts at $7.99 per month.

Netflix is still doing okay for itself for now after recovering from a rocky 2011, which entailed troubles like price hikes and angry customers leaving the service, but Netflix may have to rethink its next move since Comcast let it down like a bad first date.

You went about this all wrong.

All you have to do is call and tell them you'd like to cancel your service. Then they transfer you to someone who will do a lot more for you to keep you on. They'll ask you why you're cancelling and you tell them because so and so is much cheaper, and you're going to give them a shot. Their margin on retained customers who have been there a while and are paying full price is close to 100%, so they'll usually cut you quite a deal to keep you.

If you say anything else, they know there's a REAL good chance you're just bluffing and fishing for discounts. You call and the [i]first thing out of your mouth[/i] needs to be that you're ready to cancel. This doesn't work with just Comcast, it works with any of the TV providers, because they all have the same policies of pulling you in on an amazing deal, then 6-12 month later, the price goes through the roof and hoping you stay on, since switching is a hassle.

I've done it many times, every time fully prepared to actually cancel, but never had to unless I really wanted to switch.

You're absolutely right. I just did this exact thing today. Was on Comcast for years on Internet only. They kept rising the price until it hit $63 a month for Internet only. Listened to At&T and decided to give them a shot. Called Comcast to cancel and voila, now I have TV installed in addition to my Internet, free HBO and HD DVR for 12 months, all for $80 a month + tax. With Euro 2012 coming, this works just fine. Come March 2013, I'll call AT&T again and see if they are ready to win me over.
The important thing is, you should have plan B. Don't just bluff as the reps on the phone know all the tricks. Be prepared, research alternative offers and be ready to talk some numbers with them. If they realize that you already have installation date scheduled for the competitor, they will jump as high as they can to get you to stay with them.
Also, never insult them. This douche who started the whole thread is just self-centric You can do much more with a smile on your face and friendly voice. Believe me, the reps are people too and they have feelings just like the rest of us.

Excuse me? I was pretty nice and reasonable until the guy kept giving me no, no, no, no and turned out to be useless. At that point, I laid on some heat. I have a right to be pissed off, btw, paying what I do and being a customer of them for eight years.
