Comcast has its own streaming service called Streampix

It looks as if Netflix's plans to join forces with cable companies may be foiled already, as Comcast refuses to offer Netflix on its Xfinity TV service.

Earlier this month, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said it was likely that his video streaming service would end up doing business with cable service providers in the future. He saw this as a smart move, considering the fact that he recognizes HBO's Go on-demand as Netflix's top competitor. Moving in to the cable business would offer cable providers an alternative to HBO Go and put Netflix higher in the ranks.

"It's not in the short term, but it's the natural direction for us in the long term," said Hastings. "Many [cable service providers] would like to have a competitor to HBO, and they would bid us off of HBO."

However, Comcast has already thrown a wrench in Netflix's plans. According to Alana Davis, a Comcast spokeswoman, the cable operator has no intention of working with Netflix or offering it as an on-demand service.

"We have no plans to offer access to Netflix to our customers through our Xfinity TV service, no matter what device," said Davis.

This is a pretty big blow to Netflix, considering Comcast is the country's largest cable company with 22.3 million Xfinity subscribers. Also, Comcast already offers a service similar to Netflix called Streampix, which eliminates the need for Netflix's service. Comcast's service is also $4.99 per month as part of a cable package while Netflix's service starts at $7.99 per month.

Netflix is still doing okay for itself for now after recovering from a rocky 2011, which entailed troubles like price hikes and angry customers leaving the service, but Netflix may have to rethink its next move since Comcast let it down like a bad first date.

I agree about Comcrash

I have to agree - Comcast is just out to milk your wallet as fast as possible. I have had them since they bought out my local cable provider in 1997 I think. Great at first, since I got my first cable internet with them (dialup before that), but as other posters have stated, Comcast started raising rates at least once a year, sometimes several times. Plus they would arbitrarily move their channel assignments around once a month, so that I would have to repgrogram my HDTVs. However the big kicker for me was their charging me for equipment I didn't have, such as a STB. Periodically I'd check my bill, see 2-3 months charges for the bogus equipment, then have to wade through their customer "service" to get the charges taken off. That would last maybe 3-4 months, then the charges would mysteriously reappear until the next go-round. Comcast could never provide an explanation of why they kept doing that, despite many promises of the problem being permanently fixed.

However last summer Comcast started eliminating the analog channels and then the digital channels started getting scrambled, so that I was being forced to use their STBs after all, despite having HDTVs. Considering how much Comcast compressed their digital signals anyway, adding yet another box into the signal path just made picture quality worse IMO. So I called up Verizon and switched to their FIOS, which has much better signal quality, faster Internet service, and a lower price for the first two years. Only glitch I have with Verizon is that it is far too easy for my mother-in-law to randomly press buttons on the remote and add subscription channels without any clue as to what she is doing. So I had to call their customer service and find out how to password-protect my service level. Should be protected out of the box IMO..

After I left Comcast, they sent some saleslady to my front door sorta begging us to come back, with discounts, etc. I told them to come back in 2 years as I had signed a contract with Verizon, and then I'd go with whoever is the cheapest and best service at that time..

Yea, pretty much everyone remaps their ClearQAM channels, even FIOS.

I don't know why they do it, but I think they want everyone on a cable box, whether you want encrypted channels or not.

A solution I found was a HDHomeRun Prime...it replaces like 3 boxes for me.

Same here. I had even invested in 2 Sony HD DVRs so as not to rent from them. All that went away when they said they converted everything to digital and I would have to use their boxes. That was the straw that broke the camels back so to speak, I dropped them.

They said that the digital signal would be better, but all I saw was that areas that had blended from light to dark on-screen before were now banded from light to dark, crappy.
