Comcast has its own streaming service called Streampix

It looks as if Netflix's plans to join forces with cable companies may be foiled already, as Comcast refuses to offer Netflix on its Xfinity TV service.

Earlier this month, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said it was likely that his video streaming service would end up doing business with cable service providers in the future. He saw this as a smart move, considering the fact that he recognizes HBO's Go on-demand as Netflix's top competitor. Moving in to the cable business would offer cable providers an alternative to HBO Go and put Netflix higher in the ranks.

"It's not in the short term, but it's the natural direction for us in the long term," said Hastings. "Many [cable service providers] would like to have a competitor to HBO, and they would bid us off of HBO."

However, Comcast has already thrown a wrench in Netflix's plans. According to Alana Davis, a Comcast spokeswoman, the cable operator has no intention of working with Netflix or offering it as an on-demand service.

"We have no plans to offer access to Netflix to our customers through our Xfinity TV service, no matter what device," said Davis.

This is a pretty big blow to Netflix, considering Comcast is the country's largest cable company with 22.3 million Xfinity subscribers. Also, Comcast already offers a service similar to Netflix called Streampix, which eliminates the need for Netflix's service. Comcast's service is also $4.99 per month as part of a cable package while Netflix's service starts at $7.99 per month.

Netflix is still doing okay for itself for now after recovering from a rocky 2011, which entailed troubles like price hikes and angry customers leaving the service, but Netflix may have to rethink its next move since Comcast let it down like a bad first date.

Comcast sucks!

These dipwads raised my bill in January by 10 bucks a month from 129 to 139 via a form letter they sent to everyone in my area. The other day I was talking to a dude in Wal-Mart about how I can get Direct TV + AT&T's internet/phone for around 65-85/month total...

So, with that knowledge, I call Comcast and ask them why the heck my bill went up! Their response was as canned as the letter--"Oh, well sir, we raised prices due to enhancements in the services we are offering you!"

I replied, "Oh, really? So how come I still have only 80 cable channels? How come my bandwidth on the internet and ping times have not improved? How come my phone still works the same as it always has?"

He quickly shot back his answer, "Oh, well, sir, you see, they've all been enhanced!" (He spoke like a drone)

I laughed and told him I was going to leave Comcast unless they give me a deal. He put me on hold and came back eventually saying, "I'm sorry sir but right now we have no deals to offer you. My suggestion is you wait a month and call us back and check again."

I said, "A month?! Hah! And pay you an extra 55 bucks just to wait, seriously!"

He said, "Sir, just wait a month. There's nothing we can offer at this time but I assure you that we are providing you the best experience and enhanced service available."

I asked him for his badge number and told him I'd be informing his Investor Relations of his inability to excel in customer retention.

So, realizing I was talking to a brick wall, I asked to speak to a supervisor. He asked why... hahah he had the nerve to ask why! I said, "Because I'm going to leave Comcast unless for a better deal unless you do something to win me over--you are in business to win me over, right?"

He put me on hold, came back three times as I waited for a while telling me his supervisor was still busy so finally I told him, "Ya know, why don't you just tell your supervisor to call me back when they get off the phone."

"We can't do that sir..."

"Because we can't, it's against our policy."

"What, against your policy to what, win over customers and retain business? Really?"

"Sorry sir," and at that point he started getting really pissy. I pressed harder and eventually he caved in and with a snort said, "Fine! What's your number?!" He took it down.

I still haven't heard from a supervisor.

Comcast sucks. Screw those dillholes. I very might well just switch. Cable is pretty dumb anyways as I only watch what, four or five hours of television a week?

Four or five hours a week with internet for $140 a month?
You really need to cut the cord.
There such a thing as FREE TV.
I get 7Mbp from my DSL for $30!

I have 50 down and 10 up from Comcast for $120/mo. Parents use the TV and phone from AT&T. We had AT&T's DSL (around 30 meg?) and it wouldn't hold up and TV cut in and out bad with any use of it and a computer, it was obviously too much strain. We went to full XFinity service and my parents didn't like the TV as much so they switched back to AT&T so I told them I would keep my internet and they could have their TV/phone. I don't really care for Comcast either, but there isn't much of a good choice either way. If I could have Fios in my area I would have them.

You mean UVERSE? That's, I believe FIber, not not technically DSL. And I don't believe it went to 30mpbs, I believe 24 was the max, I could be wrong though. But CC for me, is amazing. Love the speeds.

RE: Comcast sucks!
By Sazabi19 on 3/9/2012 12:52:02 PM , Rating: 2
Yes I did, thank you. And you are correct, 30 is too high for it. The max speed they could pump to me was 18meg (just looked)and I had some techs tell me I was too far from the nearest node and other said we were in range. We had a battery "to help boost signal" to use, not sure how that works but fine. A tech said our signal may have been too hot and that is why it was messing up. I really didn't care, they could never get it all working consistently so I wanted something that would work. I noticed the net being choked off quite a bit so I wanted to switch anyways. With Comcast extreme 50 and Uverse TV and phone things are all fine now. I have gotten about 20 megs down before on a download (18.sumthin) and I love it. And I think Uverse is fiber on their infrastructure? Possibly if you live in a newer neighborhood but everything for me is still copper coming up to the house. If comcast can pump in 50 megs I'm not sure why AT&T couldn't give me 24, oh well.

By Hyperion1400 on 3/9/2012 1:20:56 PM , Rating: 1
Uverse is fiber to the DSLAM and is a rather gimped VDSL service, as they should be able to offer speeds of 40 mbps. The reason they only offer 24, is that they reserve 16mbps for TV service.

When asked why I can't get 40 mbps because I don't WANT their shitty TV service, I get an equally canned response. Ah, but Centurylink is starting to move into my area...and they DO offer full speed VDSL >:)

Now heres the big question Cheese and Sazabi, why are you content with paying $120(used to be 100 until they raised the price arbitrarily :P), for a connection you can only use for 8 hours until you hit the cap? Why are you paying more to hit the cap faster?

For $120 a month I can get 3Gbit down and 300Mbit up... from 3 cables. If I throw in another $20 it will be 3Gbit up. + more than 100 TV channels.
How can you pay so much for such shitty service?

I am on Comcast and I wish I have another choice. It's the only provider in town that gives me the kind if internet speed I want. Believe me, if I could switch, I would.

I've wasted countless hours with Comcast sorting out my bills where they always seem to overcharge me but never under charge. For every billing case, I was always right and they usually fix it after I scream/yell/ask for managers and waste many hours on the phone.

I want to switch to something else. I hate Comcast with a passion but until the "law" dictates more competition than one DSL provider and one cable provider, I have nothing else.

My normal Comcast speeds for $40 a month is 30 down and 3.5 up. Here in Portland, Comcast also offers a $200/mo package thats 100Mb up and down. I was thinking about doing that and dropping the cable and phone. Just use the net for everything.

I'm tempted to, just the certainty of whether I'm close enough to the CO or not bothers me (despite from what I can tell is fiber along the road outside my subdivision). Latency is more important to me than throughput, believe it or not. AT&T offers 12 mbps down for 30/month for a year then 50 after.

It's actually quite common for people to call up the cable company and ask if they have any promotions to keep the price down and quite a bit of the time you will get some kind of deal. If you take the initiative to call in and ask sometimes they will do it for your, but not always. You sir, sound like the douchebag. There are phone operators that genuenly can't do anything, and then there are lazy ones that don't want to do anything, this one sounded like the latter. I have had many Comcast reps call me back, supervisors or otherwise, it is NOT against policy.

Lol, I'm 22 and pay rent to my parents to help them out. It's either live with them and pay THEM, or live somewhere else and pay SOMEONE ELSE the money. I'd rather help them out right now since they need it. It's also convenient so I can get my own place and lower all of my payments :) So douche back at you for not knowing what's up semi.

You sound like a douchebag. He should have hung up on you the second you started begging for a discount.

You've got it 180 degrees backward. Comcast has no problem reducing service, or forcing you to rent additional equipment for no reason, and then gouging you for an extra $10 or so a month on top of the equipment fees. They don't need to come to you 'begging' for the extra fees - they just get some rubber-stamp permission from the couny regulatory board and then jack them up mercilessly until enough customers start leaving.

If enough people demand discounts and are willing to walk away, Comcast and other 'entertainment' providers will have to reign in their greed and start giving more value for the $$.

This guy and the others are doing all of us a favor by not bending over to Comcast, and I thank him for his support. If that makes him a douche, then we need a lot more just like him..

...and so does AT&T!
Exactly a year ago I did the same, switched from Comcast to AT&T because they just increased the fee again. But what a nightmare I stepped into. AT&T was not able to supply enough bandwidth to my house. I had to restart the cable box 3-4 time every hour because the picture became pixelated and at the same time the internet stalled. 4 service technicians came out in the first month alone trying to find the problem, but no success. The last one finally admitted that they can't get enough bandwith to my house. I unwillingly ended up with Comcast again choosing the lesser of two evils. After that AT&T tried to collect over $800 in installation and service fees for something that never worked. I had combined billing with my cell service and they threatened to disconnect by cell phones if I wouldn't pay. So that little side step took 6 month of dealing with collection to avoiding that my other service was not been disconnected. Never again AT&T.

Your horror story is why I'm hesitant to switch to AT&T. Last time I used them I had a manager tell me, "You're just a stupid customer, why should I listen to you?!" as I was suggesting to her what she needed to tell a technician to do to fix a problem I had been having.

Funny enough, when the technician DID come out and do exactly as I instructed, the problem went away. Hence why I'm trying to get Comcast to negotiate.

RE: Comcast sucks!
By Sazabi19 on 3/9/2012 12:59:07 PM , Rating: 2
We had a technician come out literally at least once a week to come replace our new AT&T box that handles their crap (new boxes for them too) and the techs said that they had a high fail rate and that the test setup they have for it wasn't fully operational and there were a lot of bugs that they didn't know how to isolate for fix, so when there is a problem with the new system they just bring out a new box and hope for the best. They also said that quite a few of the boxes are DOA, it was absolute crap. After a few months of this and finally going back to Comcast and then back to AT&T we found that high speed (50 meg) internet from Comcast works with UVerse TV and phone without a problem. AT&T cannot handle all the signal from TV and interwebs.

Well the deal I was looking at would be Direct TV for Television and AT&T for internet and voice. Apparently they are under a partnership of some sorts. Ugh, all this leaves a nasty taste in my mouth.

Blast, I can sympathize with you. I got Comcrap in 97 with just basic cable and it was $40/month. By the time we dropped them, it was $80.

The breaking point was when they disabled basic cable and insisted that we had to go digital, 1 converter box was free, the second and third we would have to rent. The move also made my 2 Sony HD DVRs useless as well and it was even more to rent a DVR from them, which was really not any improvement over my Sony boxes.

I have moved on to Direct TV and have not looked back. I am still paying probably as much as I would be with Comcrap, but the service is much better so far.

I've been using ATT DSL for internet only for a couple of years now. I'm getting level 2 speed or something, so it's only 1.5M down / 384K up, but it's reliable and fairly cheap at $35 and does all I need. I'd recommend it if you're not into too much Netflix. Youtube is too slow though to use... or ATT throttles or something.

One's experience probably depends on one's connection though, the cable/phone boxes and line quality.

If I was you I would have cancelled it all. I had the same problem though as stated above. With the whole package everything would freeze and mess up with AT&T. Now that I don't have internet through them TV service seems to work fine. They don't seem to be well off enough yet to handle any decent speed internet (decent being higher speed for me) with TV service. If you run both at the same time they just mess up. I dropped them and now Comcast has my business for the internet. More expensive yes, but much, much faster :D and consistent with no freezes!

RE: Comcast sucks!
By Concillian on 3/9/2012 2:03:17 PM , Rating: 2
You went about this all wrong.

All you have to do is call and tell them you'd like to cancel your service. Then they transfer you to someone who will do a lot more for you to keep you on. They'll ask you why you're cancelling and you tell them because so and so is much cheaper, and you're going to give them a shot. Their margin on retained customers who have been there a while and are paying full price is close to 100%, so they'll usually cut you quite a deal to keep you.

If you say anything else, they know there's a REAL good chance you're just bluffing and fishing for discounts. You call and the first thing out of your mouth needs to be that you're ready to cancel. This doesn't work with just Comcast, it works with any of the TV providers, because they all have the same policies of pulling you in on an amazing deal, then 6-12 month later, the price goes through the roof and hoping you stay on, since switching is a hassle.

I've done it many times, every time fully prepared to actually cancel, but never had to unless I really wanted to switch.

You're absolutely right. I just did this exact thing today. Was on Comcast for years on Internet only. They kept rising the price until it hit $63 a month for Internet only. Listened to At&T and decided to give them a shot. Called Comcast to cancel and voila, now I have TV installed in addition to my Internet, free HBO and HD DVR for 12 months, all for $80 a month + tax. With Euro 2012 coming, this works just fine. Come March 2013, I'll call AT&T again and see if they are ready to win me over.
The important thing is, you should have plan B. Don't just bluff as the reps on the phone know all the tricks. Be prepared, research alternative offers and be ready to talk some numbers with them. If they realize that you already have installation date scheduled for the competitor, they will jump as high as they can to get you to stay with them.
Also, never insult them. This douche who started the whole thread is just self-centric You can do much more with a smile on your face and friendly voice. Believe me, the reps are people too and they have feelings just like the rest of us.

I did one thing to help cut the cord - I bought a refurbished Ooma device, and ported over my phone number, so I'm on VOIP. Call quality has been fine, and I no longer have to worry about a phone provider, and I will always keep the same my phone number I've had for 16 years. Feels great to be free of the phone companies.

I agree with your title. Comcast sucks, and I would do anything I could to avoid giving them any more money. (I can't get satellite, and I have no other options for cable TV. So, it's either no TV or Comcast.) I'll gladly pay more for Netflix in order to keep from sending Comcast any more money.

I cut the cord almost two years ago, TV providers aren't worth it. Subscriptions to Netflix, Hulu, shows on iTunes or Amazon that I can't get via subscription, all together costs me far less than a TV subscription and still gets me everything I want.

You called the wrong department buddy. Go straight to cancellation and try to cancel, that's when they throw deals at you. IMO Comcast uses that to setup tiered pricing. They rape the general customer at $130+ a month but give the cancellation department a lot of maneuverability to keep price-sensitive customers around.

And yeah, Comcast blows. If they didn't have a near monopoly they wouldnt get away with this bs.
