Google says the total number of Android devices around the world is past 300 million
Google is looking to
boost its Android mobile operating system
even higher into the top mobile ranks at the annual Mobile World Congress (MWC) this year, which kicked off today in Barcelona, Spain.
MWC is the world's largest mobile exhibition in the industry. It features top chief executives in the business, who represent device manufacturers, mobile operators, vendors and technology providers. It is an annual conference, and will take place February 27 - March 1, 2012.
Google, which developed the popular Android operating system for mobile devices, made its way to MWC with new devices, apps and facts to share. For instance, Google said that 850,000 new Android devices are activated daily, and the total number of Android devices around the globe has surpassed 300 million. The year-on-year growth rate of Android devices has been more than 250 percent.
Google is also showing off over 100 devices at MWC, including smartphones and tablets, as well as new apps like Android Beam, which allows users to share content via touching two Android phones back-to-back. According to Google, there are over 450,000 apps available for Android-powered devices.
While Android seems to have some powerful statistics, it better keep an eye on that pesky iPhone, which
outsold all Android phones
combined at Verizon in Q4 2011. The iPhone also
outsold Android 4-to-1
on AT&T's network.

RE: MS or Google

Thats what the App store and user data collection is for. In order to keep the momentum going Google has to develop and evolve the OS. For Google the real money would be in the App Store and collecting user information that they can sell off. Seems there is a lot of money in demographics.

Using demographics and metrics to target ads very specifically is big money, Google's balance sheet clearly shows that.
As far as Android boosting Google's main revenue stream, that is certainly a goal. That said, an interesting thing to note is that Google actually makes much more mobile ad revenue on iOS than they do on Android, even with more Android devices out there. Something like 2/3rds of Google's mobile ad revenue comes from iPhone users, presumably because iOS users use the internet much more than Android users.
Google is making more off iPhone than Android, Microsoft is making more off Android than WP7, and nobody is making anything off WP7. What a strange world.
