Acura gets its first hybrid

Acura first gave us a glimpse of its entry-level luxury ILX Hybrid sedan at the Detroit Auto Show in concept form. Now that the Chicago Auto Show is upon us, the vehicle is being showed in its final production trim. Keeping with Honda/Acura tradition, not much has changed visually for the concept-to-production transition.
The ILX Hybrid is based on the Civic platform and is destined to replace the existing TSX in Acura's lineup. When it comes to the powertrain, you won't be winning any stoplight battles with the ILX Hybrid. The vehicle comes with a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine that is paired with a 20hp electric motor and a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Total system power is pegged at a meager 111hp @ 5,000rpm and 125 lb-ft between 1,000rpm and 3,000rpm, so tread lightly.
Luckily, those who require more gusto can choose from traditional 2.0-liter and 2.4-liter gasoline engines.
Fuel economy is rated at 35mpg in the city and 38mpg on the highway for the ILX Hybrid. However, these numbers are well below what's possible with its sister-ship, the Civic Hybrid, which is rated at 44/44.
"First-time luxury buyers tend to place a high value on exterior styling, affordability and environmental issues, and that's what we have created with the new Acura ILX," said Jon Ikeda, head of the Acura Design Studio. "The strategy behind this new model is to position ILX as the first opportunity for many young buyers to enter the luxury market."
The Acura ILX Hybrid will launch later this year; pricing has not yet been announced.

Well, Honda has truly lost its way, that's for sure.

A Civic Hybrid weighs nearly 2,900 pounds. You know this thing is gonna be close to 3,000 if not heavier. Can't see any fun in that with 111hp...

Oh how I long for the days of the Legend, Integra, and RSX

Well, I was specifically mentioning Acura models...

Well when I say "Honda" of course I mean Acura too. No difference.

They have discontinued every great car they ever made, in model and form.

They no longer make cars that resemble anything like the Integra, CRX (unless you look really hard at the CRZ, which is an awesome, but flawed car) the Element, the S2000, and the NSX, which is supposedly coming back, but will probably price itself out of the average enthusiest' wallet.

They just can not compete with Toyota on technology, price and performance. And that's so disturbing.

True. They have some good stuff, but every model has a "but". The TSX, but only FWD. The TL SH-AWD. Great car, but ugly as hell now, which really sucks becasue it used to look nice. I still miss my old 2001 Integra. It was literally one of the last ones ever built. It was assembled in April 2001, and the RSX (Integra#ugly) came out in May 2001. I loved that car. Now you are right, they have nothing but boring, and ugly.

That's the shame of it. They CAN compete, they just seem to have chosen not to. After they got big, they abandoned everything that made them big, and went totally conservative with everything.

Actually, I was thinking that this car is probably the blandest entry level lux car right now... and that its an improvement for Acura!

Sadly, there are still 17-20 different buttons on the steering wheel face alone. Its almost like Honda views their cars more like gadgets than functional autos.

No doubt. This thing is a dog, and it doesn't really have the MPG numbers to make up for it.

This is the most boring new car model I've seen in ages. It looks older than the TSX it is replacing. I'd rather have a Lexus CT 200H, at least that looks good (although it's bland to drive as well).
