Just when Samsung seems to have a bit of luck in Australia with the ongoing patent war, Apple comes along and throws more patent claims on the table.
According to Samsung, Apple recently expanded its patent claims against the South Korean company's Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Australia. In fact, Apple went from having a patent bid that involved three patents to one that had widened to 278 claims consisting of 22 patents and 10 products.
The Samsung products Apple is going after now, in addition to the Galaxy Tab 10.1, are a variety of smartphones and the Galaxy Tab 7, which hasn't even been released in Australia yet.
Samsung said that Apple only gave it "days" notice that the patent claims had expanded. Samsung told the court it would need until May 18 to file its defense, and asked that the hearing over the iPhone 4S be split into two parts starting in late February. Apple, however, said it would need until September to prepare its evidence.
Apple and Samsung have been battling via patent suits for almost a year now. In April 2011, Apple claimed Samsung was an
"iPhone, iPad copycat"
with its Galaxy S 4G, Epic 4G, and Nexus smartphones along with the Galaxy Tab 10.1.
From there on out, Apple worked to get Samsung's smartphones and tablets banned around the world. Samsung flung a few lawsuits back itself, such as
the 3G lawsuit against Apple in France
. However, that didn't stop Apple from successfully banning the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in both
Samsung made a comeback in December 2011, though, when a panel of three Sydney, Australia High Court judges agreed to dismiss Apple's application for special leave to appeal the Federal Court's repeal of the Galaxy Tab 10.1's sales ban. This finally put the
Galaxy Tab 10.1 on store shelves in Australia
Despite this victory for Samsung, the company can't get a break from Apple. Just this month, Samsung
lost a 3G patent case
against Apple in Germany and the EU nailed Samsung with a
over the 3G patent.

It's not so bad really. I'd rather somebody fight this out now, and i'd rather it be apple with a fight they will most likely lose. As things escalate maybe them politicians will finally get around to really doing something about the system.
We all know that if this fight fizzles out and the system remains there's only going to be another, larger one down the road. And really the only winners in these cases are the lawyers and the courts. The lawyers get paid directly, more and more with each increasing complexity in the law, while the courts never run out of work to do. Just going over the documents in these cases must cost hundreds of people months of work in a dozen countries. All because of a corperate fued of a dead man.
Really the insanity must end because it can still get alot worse....
