In addition, about 60 hours of video is now uploaded to YouTube each minute, which is an increase from the 48 hours of video uploaded each minute back in May 2011

From music videos to TV shows to clips of cats playing the piano, YouTube is a place where video enthusiasts and bored Internet users alike can find free entertainment. It seems many Web surfers are finding their way to the site lately, as YouTube recently reached the point of streaming 4 billion online videos daily.

YouTube is a video-sharing website initially created and owned by three former PayPal employees in 2005, but was purchased by Google Inc. in 2006 for $1.65 billion. It currently operates as a subsidiary of Google and offers a wide range of user-generated video content.

Since the explosion of mobile devices like smartphones and tablets, YouTube has gained some serious viewership. In fact, Google recently announced that the site streams 4 billion online videos every day. This represents a 25 percent increase over the past eight months.

In addition, about 60 hours of video is now uploaded to YouTube each minute, which is an increase from the 48 hours of video uploaded each minute back in May 2011. Google also mentioned that its display ads running with the YouTube videos are generating $5 billion in revenue annually.

YouTube has been moving up in the internet video ranks by adding 100 original programming deals. Even the talent on the site is being taken seriously, with some making six-figure incomes.

Still Buffering

Sorry, I still can't get over how freaking slow their video buffers. I've probably watched 20 half videos in the past 10 years on youtube. And that's all.

Well given that it works fine for everyone else, it surely must be your internet connection.

Sorry buddy but their video service is pure crap. It is much slower than anything else I've used in over 10 years on the Internet.

But since you have no idea what you are talking about, enjoy wasting time waiting for it.

What are you talking about? My friends, family and I all watch youtube videos all the time with no problems AND in high definition. It's either your PC or your ISP that is the problem...

I never had a problem with Youtube buffering. It's fine considering that there are so many views going on.

Sounds like someone just wants to complain about something and thinks he is above everyone else by using a video hosting service that no body else knows about or cares.

So much crap being uploaded though. Everyone wants to be a star, the next Justin Beiber, or cat piano, or Jackass jester superstar. Fake movies trailers, crappy how to's for dummies, well, I can say this... this is what freedom gets ya. I am at least thankful for it!

The power of social media cannot be understated. We, as humans, enjoy connecting with each other. User generated content has a bright future me thinks. :)

Yes, but that's 5 minutes worth watching for every real minute of actual time, and it's next to free.

How many movies are worth watching that the MPAA puts out? Or how many songs are worth listening to that the RIAA puts out?

Hulu, Netflix, and Youtube are also at the point of providing original premium content that will be a tiny fraction of the cost of usual media. Just imagine what could happen if 'must see tv' was suddenly exclusively on Netflix / Hulu / Youtube. It's also not hard to imagine the most popular shows signing with the internet streaming services, because they'll simply be able to offer more money for the new seasons.

Imagine if youtube got to be SO big that major sports broadcasts were exclusively streamed there and you could talk about it live with your friends on facebook + people in person. You could do things like real time fantasy games, real time analytics down to every last play, the list goes on and on.

Legacy media is dying and they all know it. Endless lawsuits and lobbying will eventually ruin them.

If only...

If only I could remove watched or unwanted videos of my 300+ channel subscriptions from the new homepage, I'd still be in those 4 billion views.
