Volvo joined the list of automakers that revealed impressive hybrid vehicles over the last two days at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) with its XC60 plug-in hybrid concept.

The XC60 plug-in hybrid is based on Volvo's XC60 crossover, but has a hybrid powertrain consisting of a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder engine producing 280 HP and 280 pounds of torque. The gas engine is combined with an electric motor producing 45 HP and 111 pounds of torque. The front wheels are powered through an 8-speed automatic transmission while the rear wheels are capable of being powered by an electric motor producing 70 HP and 148 pounds of torque. All together, Volvo says it's 350 HP.

The XC60 plug-in hybrid also has a 12 kWh battery that requires about 7.5 hours to fully charge using a 110-volt source or 3.5 hours with a 220-volt source.

The driving modes for the XC60 plug-in hybrid consist of pure, hybrid and power. Drivers can choose to run on pure electric power for 35 miles. Hybrid mode allows it to run like a typical hybrid vehicle, and the power mode allows the gas engine to kick in along with the electric motors for that extra boost.

According to Volvo, the XC60 plug-in hybrid should have a range of 600 miles in hybrid mode and is expected to achieve 50 mpg. It can hit zero to 60 in 5.8 seconds.

"The technology in the XC60 Plug-in Hybrid Concept is as ingenious as it is unique," said Stefan Jacoby, president and CEO of Volvo. "You can make really green progress on the road without compromising on any of the luxury car's renowned properties. No other manufacturer has succeeded in delivering fuel economy and electrical range on this level in a capable, spacious performance car with 350 horsepower on tap.

"This world-class gasoline plug-in hybrid technology, featuring a state-of-the-art four-cylinder engine from our upcoming Volvo Environmental Architecture engine family, will reach our American showrooms in a couple of years. However, it is too early to say which model will be the first to feature this solution."

The XC60 plug-in hybrid also offers information and entertainment in the way of the Volvo Sensus infotainment system, which features the fastest/shortest routes to a destination, charging stations along the way, and other helpful travel info.

There is no set price for the handsome new plug-in, and it doesn't look like there's a set date for its arrival at this point either.
