Devices using Gorilla Glass 2 are expected to hit the market in the "coming months," according to Corning
Corning announced the next generation of its damage/scratch-resistant cover glass, Gorilla Glass 2, at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas this week.
Corning's Gorilla Glass has been a hit since its 2007 debut, offering thin and damage-resistant glass for the creation of screens mainly used for portable electronic devices like smartphones and laptops. It is used by over 30 brands and has been integrated with more than 575 products.
With that kind of success, Corning has decided to release a sequel:
Corning's Gorilla Glass 2 will actually be thinner than the original by about 20 percent. The cut in thickness is aimed to better suit thinner upcoming devices. The thinner glass will allow for greater touch sensitivity as well.
But Corning assures that thinner doesn't mean weaker. The glass will still be tough, durable, damage-resistant and scratch-resistant.
"We knew Corning Gorilla Glass could get even better," said James R. Steiner, senior vice president and general manager of Corning Specialty Materials. "So, in response to our customers’ drive toward thinner form factors, we designed this new glass to enable meaningful reduction in thickness without sacrificing the outstanding glass performance for which Gorilla Glass has become highly recognized. This glass, along with Windows operating system innovations from Microsoft, will help deliver exceptional beauty, performance, and toughness for new Windows PCs. You will see this early this year with Windows-based PCs which we expect to be the first in-market laptops designed to leverage the performance of our new second-generation glass.”
Devices using Gorilla Glass 2
are expected to hit the market in the "coming months," according to Corning. The company also announced that it expects total sales for 2011 to have hit $700 million.

RE: Used for what?

Huh? Look at the Samsung Series 7 Slate.
This is already one of the nice devices running Win8 beautifully. And using Gorilla Glass as well (v1.x that is...).
Of course it would help to make the glass even thinner to further reduce the thickness of these devices, esp. when they are running x86 hardware.
But Samsung already did a lovely job with this one. Well worth to carry 300 grams over the ipad2 and live without limitations in exchange :-)
