Acura unveiled two hybrids, the NSX and ILX, and its redesigned crossover SUV, the RDX, today at the 2012 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS).

The NSX is a sports car that was originally produced by Honda between 1990 and 2005. It featured an all-aluminum V6 gasoline engine with Honda's Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC) system, as well as a mid-engine, rear-wheel drive layout.

The NSX went on hiatus for a while since 2005, but Acura has now brought it back -- as a hybrid vehicle.

According to Acura, the NSX will offer the automaker's new Sports Hybrid SH-AWD (Super Handling All Wheel Drive) technology, which consists of two electric engines that operate separately and generate either positive or negative torque to the front wheels during cornering. The system will support a mid-mounted direct injection VTEC V6 engine and will be combined with a dual clutch transmission with its own electric motor, bringing the grand total to three electric motors in the new NSX.

"This Sport Hybrid SH-AWD system will make NSX the ultimate expression of Acura's idea to create synergy between man and machine," said Takanobu Ito, president and CEO of Honda Motor Co. "The NSX will make the driver one with the car to enhance dynamic driving abilities without getting in the way.

"Like the first NSX, we will again express high performance through engineering efficiency. In this new era, even as we focus on the fun-to-drive spirit of NSX, I think a supercar must respond positively to environmental responsibilities."

The NSX Hybrid will be developed by Honda R&D Americas and manufactured in Ohio. It is expected to debut in the next three years, and will also make an appearance in the movie The Avengers, which will star Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark. There is no word on price quite yet.

While the NSX stole the show, Acura had another hybrid that caught quite a bit of attention: the ILX Concept.

The Acura ILX Concept (which is just a thinly veiled version of what will his U.S. streets) will eventually be a new Acura luxury compact sedan. It will offer three separate powertrains, including Acura's first gas-electric hybrid. The entry-level model will feature a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder engine while the high-performance model will feature a 2.4-liter inline 4-cylinder engine with a six-speed manual transmission. The hybrid edition features a 1.5-liter gasoline-electric hybrid powertrain.

The ILX will also have a load of features, such as a smart entry keyless access system, Pandora Internet radio, and a text messaging function.

"First time luxury buyers place the highest value on exterior styling, affordability and environmental issues and that's a virtual definition of what we have created with the new Acura ILX," said Jon Ikeda, Acura Design Studio head. "The strategy behind this new model is to position ILX as the first opportunity for many young buyers to enter the luxury market."

The ILX is scheduled for release this Spring, and will be manufactured by Honda Manufacturing of Indiana, LLC.

Acura's third unveiling of the day was the 2013 RDX, which is the second generation of Acura's crossover SUV. It will also be released in Spring 2012, and will have a 3.5-liter V6 engine producing 273 HP. It will also have a six-speed automatic transmission, a new lock-up torque converter, EPA fuel economy ratings of 20 mpg city and 28 mpg highway, and a lighter AWD system.

The RDX will receive perks like a three-view rear camera, a smart entry keyless access system, and a navigation system with a hard disc drive with 60 GB of storage capacity.

If you're referring to the $300k+ exotics, then sure, we could have that argument all the way up to the $1m cars.

I haven't had the rare opportunity to drive any of the Skyline GT-R's, although I did seriously look in to importing one ($100k for R34) but it required a second mortgage as no bank would loan money for car without a VIN.

Anyway, I could agree, the NSX had some very unique handling characteristics, you had a hard time comparing it to other cars. Was by far the most impressive, successfully making fun fully comfortable without much compromise.

I miss mine dearly, and browse eBay every month for a replacement..

Sure the Jag is not a sports car but a real nice classic sports sedan, with imho best lines ever, and is perfect to cruse the Autobahn with 150 miles/h.

But the R33 eats Porsche's, M3s and Ferrari's that cost up to 2x or 3x as mouths for breakfast, and i don't mean in a strait line only.

And i am not even claiming eider one of them are real sport cars, tho the R33 is getting close to one, and is the best i can afford/wiling to pay! (mine was inc tuning totally $35K)
And 550HP is a lot for a 1.4T weighting car, and dose 0 to 60 under 5sec

But i do say, anyone claiming that a NSX is not a real sports car, knows shit a bout sport cars!

But then again, if i following your logic, then the guys from Top Gear also know shit about sport/super-cars. ^_^
