Fails to hit analyst revenue predictions for Q4

It would seem that Samsung's recent success in the smartphone market is beginning to take its toll on some of its competitors. HTC recently posted dismal sales figures, and the outlook for Motorola Mobility isn't so hot, either.

Citing tough competition and patent wars, Motorola missed sales expectations for Q4. Analysts had predicted at least $3.88 billion in revenue. Motorola delivered $3.4 billion.

As for shipments, the company's early figures show 5.3 million smartphones were sold, of the 10.5 million mobile devices in all.

Motorola said that it would be modestly profitable for the quarter, but did not disclose details.

The full earnings report will be available January 26.

Meanwhile, Google is still in the process of acquiring Motorola's mobile unit, which will deepen its own roster of patents while enabling the company to really deliver an Android ecosystem. Google says that it will continue to treat Motorola Mobility as a third-party device maker, and not favor it over Motorola's competitors.

Maybe if Moto didn't go with the most expensive carrier to release their flagship phones, and releasing some of them at $300 was just too much seeing the competition selling similar phones for $200.

Releasing smartphones at the $299 price point (or higher) has failed to slow down Apple (unfortunately). Personally I believe many would-be Moto buyers opted to wait instead for the SGN.

Apples fastest selling phones (and longest on the waitlist) are 16 gb versions. You can usually get the 32 and 64s easily.

I just got two iphone 4s's and a skyrocket. Honestly, if Apple had a 4" plus screen on the iphone, I would have bought it. The screen is nice and bright on the skyrocket, but the build quality isn't that good. The case is very cheap feeling and battery life is poor, even without LTE.

Disagree. Moto was almost a year late bringing the Bionic to the market. Had they released it on time, they would have dominated the market with the first dual core LTE phone on verizon. By the time Bionic was available it was unremarkable compared to concurrent offering at that time.

Also, locked bootloaders, Moto has been promising them, have yet to deliver. Primary reason I went with the galaxy.

locked bootloaders should be un-locked bootloaders.

I agree with you, they dropped the ball. However, the bootloader argument is to my point, that people passed on Moto to go with a different option.
