Nokia has announced OS 2006 for the N-770 internet tablet, enabling Google Talk, SIP support and other enhancements

Nokia today announced OS 2006 for the Nokia 770 Internet tablet. OS 2006 is a major update for the 770 and includes a host of new features and performance enhancements. Probably one of the most prominent additions to OS 2006 is the addition of Google Talk.

The Nokia 770 is a Linux-based WiFi-enabled small form factor Internet tablet that allows users to access Internet based services anywhere an open WiFi connection is available. DailyTech reported earlier this week that Nokia and Google had signed a partnership agreement to develop portable technology solutions and the inclusion of Google Talk in OS 2006 is the first indication of that partnership.

OS 2006 includes other updates as well, including better memory management, the Jabber/XMPP protocol through Google Talk and SIP support. Nokia hopes to support Skype competitor Gizmo's VoIP client on the device in the near future as well. Google will also be the default search provider for the device.

it's not all about performance, but while price stays too high for possible uses, tablets (and alikes) offer neither of both worlds - portability is lacking (won't fit into the pocket and battery life sucks) and performance can't match cheaper laptops. a cool gadget but not a lot beyond that.
