Video game console usage is on the rise in general, up 7 percent from the first half of 2010

A new Nielsen study shows that video game console use is alive and well, despite what Angry Birds creator and Rovio CEO Peter Vesterbacka predicted back in March regarding the death of console games for mobile games.

According to the report, use of the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii gaming consoles combined rose 7 percent from the first half of 2010 to the first half of 2011.

An important question aside from the amount of use is what exactly these consoles are being used for. Nielsen says each console has its own niche, where 34 percent of Xbox 360 owners commonly use it for online gaming, 22 percent of PlayStation 3 owners use it for DVD/Blu-ray, and 55 percent of Wii owners use it for offline gaming.

But the use of these consoles stretches beyond just gaming, DVDs and Blu-ray. The report also found that consoles are increasingly being used for video streaming from services such as Netflix and Hulu.

According to the study, video streaming accounts for 14 percent of Xbox 360 usage, 15 percent of PlayStation 3 usage, and 33 percent of Wii usage.

Increased use of video streaming hardly seems surprising for the first half of 2011, since Netflix was still a growing hit at that time. In Q1 2011 and Q2 2011, Netflix had 3.3 million and 1.8 million net subscriber additions respectively. However, after raising prices, changing plans, limiting streams per account, and announcing (then killing off) the separate Qwikster DVD spinoff, Netflix ended up losing 810,000 customers during Q3. This could likely affect the above-mentioned percentages for console streaming usage later in the year.

I have both a monster i7 overclocked with vertex 3 SSD blah blah blah, and I also have an xbox 360 (2 actually).

Some things are better on the PC, and some things are better on the console.

I too have a i7 with high end video card and 24in 1920x1200 monitor and two xbox 360's (one bedroom, one family room). I don't play many games on the xbox anymore, it is mainly used for streaming movies or looking at slideshows/streaming music from my PC with friends/family. I game on the PC exclusively since I hooked up a xbox controller on my PC for racing games. I mostly play FPshooters now though which needs keyboard/mouse IMHO...
The first guy was right though. I play angry birds when taking a crap or sometimes if I have trouble going to sleep! That's it!

I think pretty much any game could be a lot better on the PC, but when developers whore themselves out to the consoles and not allow for better controls on the PC, there really isn't much of a difference (I.E. ME2, why is run, take cover, jump over all on the same key).

Mass Effect 2 (I assume you are talking about it with ME 2) has such a horrid default FOV on the PC it isn't even worth playing. Sitting 2 feet away from a 27 inch monitor playing with an FOV of 55 sucks.

(Yeah you can hack it to go to 90+ but it breaks the conversations and that sucks too.)

Years later and there still is no fix. Disgusting. I think BioWare is going downhill and fast.

At least Bethesda has listened to all the outrage and tried to improve the interface and allow things such as mouse acceleration and FOV to be properly changed in Skyrim.
