RIM chooses new OS name  (Source: Reuters)
RIM to use BlackBerry 10 instead

RIM is taking a beating on the smartphone market today with the popularity of its smartphone and tablets dwindling. More and more consumers and business, which were the lifeblood of RIM in the past, are leaving for newer and better devices like the iPhone and Android offerings. Blackberry was dealt another blow when a federal court ruled against it in a trademark claim recently.
RIM had been calling its latest OS BBX, but a software company already held that trademark. Basis International Basis sued RIM in U.S. Federal court in Albuquerque NM. The courts have ruled against RIM and declared that it can't use the BBX trademark. That means that RIM couldn't use the name for its OS at the DevCon conference in Asia.
Like most tech firms, RIM generally remains quiet about suits and litigation, but it commented this time out to say it had picked a new name for the OS ahead of the conference. RIMs BBX will now be called Blackberry 10. The move means that RIM won't need to pay licensing fees for future use of the BBX name, but it still might be liable for damages for using the trademark in past.
RIM issued a statement to Reuters that read, "RIM doesn't typically comment on pending litigation, however RIM has already unveiled a new brand name for its next generation mobile platform. As announced at DevCon Asia, RIM plans to use the 'BlackBerry 10' brand name for its next generation mobile platform."
RIM recently fell short of its financial targets thanks in part to very weak sales of the PlayBook tablet. Despite massive price cuts on the PlayBook the tablet has still gained little traction in the tablet market. The PlayBook lacks basic functionality expected of tablets today like integrated email and other capabilities making it unpopular.

Instead of BBX, they should call it BBW. lol. RIM has no relevance whatsoever in the tablet space. They're just like Microsoft in that regard. The tablet market is Android and iOS and nobody else is relevant, since neither RIM nor Microsoft have any competitive products available for purchase today. End of discussion. RIM needs to just roll over and die already so they can get acquired.

I completely agree. I don't see any value in Blackberry or Windows 8 (ARM based) tablets either. They are years late to the game and are not offering anything that consumers want. The case may be different for businesses... but then the productive uses for a tablet in the business world are very limited.

MS should buy Blackberry, they are perfect for each other - slow to execute and increasingly irrelevant.

BBX was also a terrible name, so they dodged a bullet there anyway. The real crime is that it was their first choice.

and are not offering anything that consumers want

Sorry, I should clarify what I mean. They aren't going to offer anything new that will substantially differentiate themselves from their competition that already owns the market. In the case of Windows 8, it's not like I can run any of the software I already own on an ARM based Windows 8 tablet. Software companies are sure as hell not going to recompile their code for free either (unless their software was free to begin with).

In the case of Blackberry, they are losing their appeal to businesses. Their appeal to consumers had been the whole smartphone concept, but they've fallen so far behind that they've just become the budget brand.

Its funny how fast RIM went from "Crackberry" as in, addictive like crack to "Crackberry" - something that = Ass

Slightly more complicated then that: Windows 8 on tablet will have MS Office compatability. I love Android but as someone who goes to meetings frequently and works with excel and word constantly; If I can go to a meeting and pull up an excel spreadsheet or copy notes directly onto my tablet, I'll consider buying a windows tablet. That being said I haven't gotten my transformer prime yet, we'll see if she can perform in the office.

And before anyone says, just buy a netbook; not the same man, not the same..

RIM has sold tablets, therefore they have relevance. RIM is a company with employees who are people who have families to feed. Your opinion that they should just all give up and go and try to find work elsewhere is asinine in the extreme.

But I guess readers are free to troll their opinion. On the other hand the article's author clearly has a bias. Comments like his should be reserved for blogs, not news articles.

Here is the flaw in that post.
