For three-month average period ending in October, Android nabbed 46.3 percent of smartphone share

According to new figures released by digital analytics company ComScore, Android-based devices made up 46.3 percent of the U.S. smartphone market in the three-month measuring period ending in October, representing a 4.4-percent increase over July's data.

Apple's iOS share also rose by 1 percent from July, claiming a 28.1-percent share of the U.S. smartphone market. Apple has been bolstered recently by the mid-October launch of the best-selling iPhone 4S.

The results for BlackBerry manufacturer Research In Motion (RIM), like much of the news surrounding the Canadian company, was not so stellar. The company lost 4.5 percent of its market share since the July report, ending October with just 17.2 percent. Both a widespread international outage and a business market that has turned its back on the BlackBerry brand in favor of the iPhone hurt he embattled company.

Microsoft and Symbian both saw a 0.3-percent loss over the same period, ending October with 5.4 percent and 1.6 percent respectively.

ComScore estimates that about 90 million people own smartphones in the U.S., a 10 percent increase from the preceding three-month measuring period that ended in July.

The report also included a ranking of top U.S. OEM mobile phone manufacturers. Samsung held firm at its top post, with a flat 25.5 percent. LG and Motorola, the No. 2 and No. 3 manufacturers in the U.S., both slipped a bit, although not enough to change rankings. Meanwhile, Apple (No. 4) was the only manufacturer to gain share, with a 1.3-percent surge to end October with 10.8 percent of the market.

ComScore estimates the approximately 234 million Americans ages 13 and up used mobile devices during the measuring period.
