Plug-in hybrid Cruze should be more efficient than the Eco (Source: GM)
Plug-in Cruze will be more like Prius than Volt
General Motors is taking a multi-pronged approach when it comes to fuel-efficient vehicles. Its most high-profile “eco” cruiser these days is the Chevrolet Volt (which is currently having a bit of an image problem). The company also has a few traditional hybrids in the mix and is gearing up to launch a diesel version of the Chevrolet Cruze (Eco D).
Green Car Reports is now reporting that GM is looking to bring yet another variant of the Cruze to market to compliment the gasoline-powered Eco and the diesel-powered Eco D. A plug-in gasoline hybrid version of the Cruze is destined for the U.S. as soon as 2014.

With the similarly sized Volt already having a place in Chevrolet’s lineup, many may wonder if a plug-in Cruze will find a market. GM's Jim Federico, however, says not to worry. "Plug-in Cruze doesn’t make Volt redundant at all," Federico told Go-Auto. "Plug-in Cruze would have a different powertrain. Plug-in hybrids use both the engine and motor all the time."
Apparently, the plug-in Cruze will be more like the Prius Plug-in than the Volt. It will be a plug-in with some capacity for full-electric driving, but will operate like a traditional hybrid; not an extended range EV like the Volt.
The Cruze plug-in will have a 5.2 kWh battery pack and have an electric driving range of 9 to 13 miles.
