This could be an epic Thursday in the smartphone world
Verizon Wireless -- a joint venture between Verizon Communications, Inc. (
) and Vodafone Group Plc. (
) -- has long been both America's largest network and America's top seller of Android smartphones -- even if other networks sometimes have
According to photographs of apparent internal memos
, Thursday, December 8, 2011 could be a huge day for Verizon Wireless. The memo indicates two of the hottest upcoming Android phones -- Nexus Prime and the Droid 4 -- will launch that day.

The Nexus Prime, the rebranded Galaxy Prime from Samsung Electronics Comp., Ltd. (
), was officially announced
back in the middle of October
, but Verizon Wireless -- the device's exclusive carrier -- has been cagey about giving a release date.
The Nexus Prime is distinctive in several ways. First and foremost it's the flagship Android 4 "Ice Cream Sandwich" phone, and may be the only phone for a brief while to carry the new operating system. Second, it sports a distinctive
curved face-hugging packaging
(though the Verizon model is a bit bulkier and less curved as it has to house the larger battery in the LTE variant, LTE radio chips, etc.).
Lastly, it is only the second Android smartphone to support a higher resolution multi-touch display than Apple, Inc.'s (
) iPhone 4s (720x1280 pixels vs. 640x960 pixels on the iPhone 4S; the iPhone 4S has a higher pixel density screen, though). The other phone -- the Rezound from HTC Corp. (
) -- generally has better hardware; but comes with a smaller screen, a worse battery, and is bulkier.

A semi-complete list of the rumored specs is seen below:
1.2GHz OMAP 4460 ARM Cortex-A9 dual-core processor from Texas Instruments, Inc. (TI)
4.65" 720x1280 HD Super AMOLED
16GB of memory (optional 32GB)
5MP rear camera with LED flash plus a 1.3MP front facing camera
1080p (30fps) video recording
1850 mAh replaceable battery
Android 4.0 "Ice Cream Sandwich"
(You may notice the specs are essentially identical to the upcoming Galaxy S II HD LTE, which is rumored to launch on Verizon, except for that the Galaxy S II HD LTE has a microSDHC slot, which the Prime lacks.)
The Droid 4 from Google Inc. (
) subsidiary Motorola is special because it is only the world's second LTE slider phone. (The first, the
, launched last month.)

There are few Android options if you want an Android smartphone equipped with a physical keyboard (slider) and fewer still if you want a top-of-the-line phone hardware-wise. Currently the best sliders available are arguably the
Droid 3/Milestone 3
from Motorola (on Verizon Wireless) and the
from HTC (on Deutsche Telekom AG's (
) T-Mobile USA). The Droid 4 should soon top that pack. It includes:
4″ Super AMOLED Advanced display
Full 5-row “illuminated” keyboard
Non-removable battery (maybe)
1080p video recording (assuming 8MP)
With Verizon Wireless's
double data promotion in full effect
and with two of the most desirable Android smart phones on the market launching, this looks to be one epic day for the carrier, should the leak prove true.

Increasingly leaning toward Apple.

Fragmentation has those that believe it is a problem and those that don't. A Droid 4 coming 6 months after the Droid 3 further encourages me to believe that it is an issue. I understand that my EVO is a geriatric case being just over a year old.(By my purchase date.) I'm sure it will not get ICS unless HTC surprises me. I never really liked Apple products but the fact that they continue to support their older models makes them more and more appealing. I thought about getting a Nexus phone to skip the whole manufacturer GUI issue, but even the older Nexus One will no longer be updated. Between the updates never coming out and phones becoming obsolete before they even come out (Razor), I don't know how much longer people will be staying with their Androids.

Faster hardware and real developer support are other good excuses to go iPhone. The main entity Android handsets are in aid of are the carriers,
the customer. You get to choose all kinds of hardware, sure, and it's because very little of it gets support from carriers, which means more turnover in order to upgrade the OS which means more profits for them. Disgusting.
Why go through numerous substandard pieces of hardware in order to keep up with OS updates when you can just be on one well supported platform with good hardware? My biggest worry with WP7 is that carriers have shown the same support (or lack thereof) in terms of OS updates. I really hope MS takes the reins on it, or at the very least enforces it with the Nokia handsets.
