Commercial shows Apple fans camped out for the iPhone 4S, marveling at the Samsung Galaxy S II
The past year's events have made it pretty clear that Apple and Samsung aren't the best of friends. Apple initially accused Samsung of copying
and iPad designs when developing the Galaxy line, and a
long list of lawsuits
have been launched back and forth ever since around the globe.
Apple may have successfully killed Samsung's sales in some countries outside the U.S., but Samsung isn't going to take this lying down. In its latest commercial for the Galaxy S ll, Samsung makes fun of Apple fanboys by portraying a scene where they're all waiting in line hours in advance
for the next release
. While waiting, the fanboys are noticing passerby with phones that are "magnificent," and of course the phones in question are Galaxy S ll's.
The fanboys make pompous comments while waiting in line, such as "If it looks the same, how will people know I upgraded?" and an exchange between two fanboys that goes as follows:
Fanboy 1: I could never get a Samsung, I'm creative.
Fanboy 2: Dude you're a barista.

I'm not sure what the point of the commercial is, other than to fuel fanboy wars. I've never liked the "I'm a Mac" commercials, and this is even worse. Samsung is just mocking iPhone customers, which is just preaching to the choir of anti-iPhone fanboys who already want nothing to do with iPhone. Samsung surely can't expect to make converts out of the customers they're mocking.

Pretty much. Fanboys of any kind are annoying, and this gives Android fanboys a chance to go hurr durr.
And as you said, it does this by attacking a "type" rather than selling based on the merit of the device alone. With slower hardware/performance and weak developer/enterprise support, the Galaxy is a hard sell if you go by facts alone. Might as well attack "iDrones" instead. At least they pointed out the bigger screen, that's one legit reason.

It's simple. It's divisive and gets people talking about the advert. See that link to watch the video of it? That there is free advertising for Samsung. Where they would have paid for a slot on a TV station, they've now got a viral video running round the net, getting lots of people talking about it.
They know this won't convince Apple fans to buy a Galaxy. They also know they aren't going to convince such fanboys whatever they do. What this does is get Samsung's phones more well-known amongst the much larger audience of people who aren't tech nerd fanboys.
The fact the ad went viral will be enough for the marketing team behind this to be getting a big, fat bonus.
