After catching a sneak peek at what
has confirmed as
the BlackBerry London
yesterday, Research In Motion (RIM) has announced two new smartphones today, which will run on the new BlackBerry 7 operating system.
The two new BlackBerry models are the BlackBerry Bold 9790 and BlackBerry Curve 9380. They both offer enhanced multimedia, social, and productive features as well as several pre-installed apps.
The BlackBerry Bold 9790 has a touch display as well as a full QWERTY keyboard and optical trackpad, but has a narrow design. It features a 1 GHz processor, 8 GB of onboard memory and an expandable memory card slot for up to 32 GB of extra storage. The BlackBerry Bold 9790 can be used for work or play with its Web browsing, multimedia and document composing capabilities.
The BlackBerry Curve 9380, according to RIM, is the first Curve to smartphone with a touch display. In fact, this new smartphone is all touch, no keyboard or physical buttons. It features a 3.2-inch high-resolution display, BlackBerry Messenger (BBM), and pre-installed apps such as Facebook and Twitter. It also has a 5 MP camera with flash and video recording. According to RIM, the new Curve is "compact and stylish."
In addition, voice-activated search,
Near Field Communications
(NFC) and Augmented Reality will be part of the BlackBerry 7 experience. NFC will allow users to make purchases using their phones instead of credit cards or cash, and the Wikitude Augmented Reality app makes it easier for BBM users to find other BBM contacts nearby in real-time. The app also allows the BlackBerry user to read reviews on restaurants, find information on a landmark nearby, etc.
The new BlackBerry 7 OS will include many pre-installed apps, such as Documents To Go Premium, BlackBerry Protect, BlackBerry Balance, the Social Feeds (2.0) app and the Facebook for BlackBerry app.
RIM has not announced an exact date of release for both smartphones, but said they will become available around the globe in the coming weeks. Pricing also hasn't been released.
In other RIM-related news, the BlackBerry London leak from yesterday started a number of rumors that BlackBerry was moving away from the full QWERTY keyboard, since the picture showed an all-touch screen without the keyboard. The announcement of the all-touch BlackBerry Curve 9380 may further solidify such rumors, but according to
, who has a secret source from RIM, there are no plans to completely eliminate the keyboard from RIM phones. In fact, the source said that RIM is "absolutely committed to building more great keyboard-based smartphones." But that doesn't mean the company won't branch out a bit into the all-touch displays.

by not embracing outmoded tech and being open to better cheaper ways to operate that not only work, but offer a happier user? Yes, I already am.
Like I said, I am not in a govt lab or cutting edge research industry . Most companies aren't. RIM is losing ground in the enterprise sector... I do think the study above is skewed, but the fact remains RIM is on its way out.
