Prius C will be unveiled at the Tokyo Auto Show
It's hard to keep anything secret in the automotive world, and Toyota has had its fair share of leaks over the past few months. First there were leaked brochures of the Yaris-sized Prius C and most recently, the lightweight, RWD
Toyota FT-86/Scion FR-S
. Last month,
we covered the leaked pictures/specs
on the Prius C, but Toyota is just now officially confirming the arrival of the tiny hybrid.
As expected, this will be Toyota's entry-level hybrid in the U.S. market and should be priced thousands less than the standard Prius. Toyota says that the five-seat Prius C is aimed at "youthful shoppers seeking fuel efficiency, technology, and spirited driving dynamics" -- the latter characteristic has never been used to describe a vehicle wearing the Prius badge.
Toyota also claims that the Prius C will deliver over 50 mpg in the city (we're hoping that it edges closer to 60 mpg), will feature nine airbags, Bluetooth connectivity, and will be available with the
Entune infotainment system
Per the leaked specs, the 157" long Prius C will be powered by a 1.5-liter gasoline engine that generates 74hp and a single electric motor that provides 61hp.
Toyota’s Prius C will makes its first stateside appearance at the Detroit Auto Show in January.

RE: Should sell

Not sure why you consider a Prius expensive. Edmunds rates a Prius III as having a TCO of 35,056 over 5 years/75,000 miles. A Ford Focus Hatchback SE Manual, cost 34,000, under the same rating system. Thats not really a significant difference. And as you use the car longer and longer, that difference then completely disappears. If your the type of person who buys a car and uses it until its exhausted (150,000+), A Prius is likely the cheapest C/D car on the market.
I am not sure why you would think the Prius C would be less "expensive" feeling either. Its likely to start at ~18K min with typically transaction prices above 20K. Its a B segment hatch as well so... (Yaris is 14k+ afterall, and a Hybrid system has shown to be ~5,000 extra base cost)
Personally the Prius C (B-Segment Hatch) either needs to be very inexpensive or have significantly higher MPG than Prius (either 55 combined or 60 City) to really make a mark in the US market that prefers the C-segment+ sized cars. Not sure it can sell cheaply enough when someone can get a Versa/etc for 11-12k.
