New company will start in spring 2012
Many of the companies in the LCD panel manufacturing realm are looking for ways to help them improve the bottom line, including selling out and restructuring. Sony announced that it was
breaking off its struggling TV arm a few weeks ago
Sony's Ayano Iguchi said when the break up was announced, "By dividing into three divisions, we will make clearer the mission and responsibilities of these."
Hitachi, Sony, and Toshiba have all agreed to the integration of their small and medium size LCD panel businesses in conjunction with the Innovation Network Corporation of Japan (INCJ). The merged businesses will be known as Japan Display. Sony, Hitachi, and Toshiba will each retain about 10% of the merged venture and INCJ will hold a much larger portion.
The new company will be partly public.
INCJ will invest 200 billion yen into Japan Display in exchange for newly issued shared in the company. The new entity is expected to start operating in the spring of 2012.
Panasonic has also announced in a separate deal that it has agreed to sell a LCD panel factory to Japan Display. The factory sale will be complete in April 2012.

Americans are too cheap
As opposed to what other country? Keep in mind also that the US is comprised largely of people from other lands (Mexico/China/India/etc.)
I think the problem is what you have with any prosperous country... 'affluenza'
"Why should I fold this inflatable kiddie pool up and store it until next summer, when I can just toss it and buy another next year for $5?"
You can also see this where people toss aluminum cans in the garbage and you see immigrants (could be legal or not ;-) climbing in the dumpsters searching for them. "Why bother with the 3 cent cost of the can?"
I saw it in Japan where people would put perfectly good stereo equipment, futons, or books out to be picked up on garbage collection day. (I happened to 'recycle' several items on occasion lol.)
I actually think that is illegal in Japan and the same goes for much of the US if I am not mistaken (privacy issues) and then there are the regulations like the one that says you can't sell or give away a used carseat.
Anyway, it seems the only way to get rid of this behavior is to let the consumers see the effects of their decisions. Unfortunately the focus of this country and others like it is to focus on spreading this affluenza instead of letting it only affect the "1%".
Money doesn't make people happy and it certainly does a number on the environment when everyone can suddenly afford 40" flat screens. This is why I don't understand why democrats are considered the 'green' party (not to be confused with 'The Green Party'). Give Warren Buffet a $1000 and he invests in Solar Power. Give Billy Ray Valentine $1000 and he throws away his working 26" Trinitron and buys a 40" Sammy LCD. Sure it uses less power, but he watches it twice as much since it rocks lol.
And unfortunately the republican party wants to give out just as much money and run the country like a business. No thanks, I'd prefer things work themselves out given our individual liberties. Quit d*cking with what we have left of the free market.
