Kindle owners with an Amazon Prime membership can borrow up to one book per month with no due dates or extra fees
Amazon announced a new service today that will put a library into the hands of Kindle owners who have an Amazon Prime membership.
Amazon is introducing the Kindle Owners' Lending Library, which allows Kindle users to borrow books for free -- as long as they have an Amazon Prime membership. Kindle owners can borrow up to one book per month, and have no due dates or fees for borrowing the book.
"Owning a Kindle just got even better," said Amazon Founder and CEO Jeff Bezos. "Today, we're introducing a new Prime benefit built for Kindle: The Kindle Owners' Lending Library. Prime members now have exclusive access to a huge library of books to read on any Kindle device at no additional cost and with no due dates."
The lending library offers Prime members can choose from "thousands" of fiction and nonfiction books which can be returned and chosen right from a user's Kindle device.
Amazon Vice President of Kindle Content Russ Grandinetti added that Kindle users, publishers and authors could all benefit from the new lending library. Some titles in the Kindle Owners' Lending Library are included in the library at a fixed fee, while in other cases, Amazon is purchasing the title each time it is borrowed.
"The Kindle Owners' Lending Library is a great new benefit for Kindle owners and an entirely new growth opportunity for authors and publishers," said Grandinetti. "With the growth in Prime membership and the recent addition of Prime Instant Video, we've been able to broaden our relationships with movie and TV studios such as CBS, Fox and NBC Universal and significantly increase their revenue. We're excited to expand the investment to books -- with this launch, we expect three immediate results: Kindle owners will read even more, publisher revenues will grow, and authors will see larger royalty checks."
Amazon is looking to beef up its revenues as well, since Amazon Prime is a $79 annual membership. It offers users free two-day shipping, access to almost 13,000 movies and TV shows through its streaming service and now thousands of free books to borrow. New services are also likely aimed to boost sales of its latest Kindle release, the 7-inch $199 Kindle Fire.
