AT&T soldiers on with LTE deployments

U.S. carriers are currently in the process of transitioning to 4G wireless services via LTE. Verizon is well on its way to covering the nation, while AT&T is far behind in its rollout efforts. Sprint LTE network; however, is still in its infancy.

AT&T announced today that its LTE network will expand to four additional markets on November 6. Those markets include Athens, Baltimore, Boston, and Washington, D.C. These deployments join AT&T's initial rollout last month (Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio).

To kickoff the expansion of its LTE network, AT&T will also launch its first LTE smartphones on November 6. These include the HTC Vivid and the Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket.

HTC Vivid:

4.5-inch qHD display (540x960 resolution)
1.2 GHz dual-core processor
8MP camera with f2.2 28mm wide-angle lens
1080p HD video recording at 60 fps
16 GB of on-board memory pus microSD slot

Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket:

4.5-inch Super AMOLED Plus display (800x480 resolution)
Android Gingerbread (2.3.5)
1.5 GHz dual-core processor
8MP rear-facing camera with LED flash, 2-megapixel front-facing camera
1080p HD video recording
16 GB of on-board memory plus microSD slot

The HTC Vivid will be priced at $199 with a two-year contract, while the Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket will be priced at $249 with a two-year contract.

“We’ve far exceeded our commitment to offer 12 new Android devices this year –now including our first 4G LTE smartphones, said AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets CMO David Christopher. “We’re delivering an incredible amount of innovation to our customers, which is a huge reason why more than half our post-paid subscribers are using a smartphone.”

That's a good start. Would be nicer if AT&T got the Nexus on LTE. It would be even more remarkable if they were able to get an LTE iPhone before anyone else.

I'm pretty sure Sprint's getting the iPhone 5 exclusively in the US market but it will not have LTE. That's likely why the introduction was delayed. Remember, Sprint's "bet the farm": 20 BILLION iPhone deal that we still don't know the details of was only leaked a day before the iPhone 4S was announced and we were all expecting them to announce TWO phones on that day. My guess is that they delayed the worldwide launch to retool the presentation now that it would not include AT&T or Verizon in the USA. Steve Jobs' death may have delayed this further. Sprint has now changed gears and it rolling out LTE, so whatever is released after the iPhone 5 may continue with this arrangement.
