Samsung's Galaxy Nexus is sportin' Android 4.0, aka Ice Cream Sandwich

After weeks of teasing and false starts, Google and Samsung are finally ready to get official with Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) and the Galaxy Nexus. Being that this a "pure" Google phone, customers will get the full Ice Cream Sandwich experience without the added fluff that carriers like to spray all over their smartphones.
 
For those that doubted Boy Genius Report's leaked specs a few weeks ago, you'll have more than a bit of egg on your face tonight. BGR's earlier story matches up perfectly with the production Galaxy Nexus:

  • 1.2GHz dual-core processor
  • 4.65" 1280x720 HD Super AMOLED
  • 1GB RAM
  • 16GB of memory (optional 32GB)
  • 5MP rear camera with LED flash plus a 1.3MP front facing camera
  • 1080p (30fps) video recording
  • LTE
  • 1750 mAh battery 

It should come as no surprise that Samsung has thrown in dual-band 802.11n, NFC, a barometer (!), and Bluetooth 3.0. Those looking for the nascent Bluetooth 4.0 spec in an Android phone will have to mosey on over to the Motorola Droid RAZR.
 
The most distinguishing feature of the Galaxy Nexus is its curved display which better conforms to your face while talking. In addition, the Galaxy Nexus is 8.94mm thick and weighs 135 grams. This compares to 7.1mm and 127 grams for the just announced Droid RAZR.
 
The Samsung Galaxy Nexus will operate on Verizon’s LTE network according to a leak from earlier today, which will be serving 178 markets by November 17.

Yeah the camera is actually all about the lens all the Mp cap is is the data size maximum of the pictures. It is more like this if you have a great lens on a 3Mp camera it will take better pictures than an 8Mp. The 5 Mp camera on the new nexus will by default record full HD in picture or filming mode and will take a picture very fast. That tells me the lens has a very good depth perception and very fast shutter action. Without those two thing you can use a 16Mp camera with a standard or normal lens and get pics of half the value visually this 5Mp one will produce!

If that was true, simply attaching a good SLR lens to your phone (there are kits for this) would make the pics rival a dslr. They won't, because you're greatly oversimplifying things. Sensors matter. Tiny pixels collect less light and are more prone to dark current, blooming, and tend to have more noise. That's why if you cram 8Mp into the same space as a 3Mp chip you start to get problems. The best solution there if to make the sensor larger. The other option is binning, telling neighboring pixels to work as one big pixel, turning your mediocre 8Mp camera into a pretty good 3Mp camera. You probably know all this too, it's just not good to generalize when it comes to imaging.

Um, no.

You'd have to take off the cheap lens first. And that's not likely.

A cheap lens can distort the image, reduce focus, or introduce aberrations. This isn't fixed by using a better lens on top of it. That's like smearing a layer of vaseline on your eyeglasses and claiming putting binoculars in front of your smeary glasses will give you better vision.

A lens has a HUGE impact on image quality. You do need a good sensor, but for the size of apeture and depth from sensor to lens you're stuck with, you're not going to have anything incredible.
