BB OS is out, BBX is in

Recent reports from market research firms have revealed that Waterloo, Ontario based Canadian smartphone maker Research in Motion, Ltd. (TSE:RIM) is losing customers not only on a percentage basis, but also on a per unit basis in the U.S.  Adding to the company's woes, it recently experienced a major international outage that left BlackBerry users without email or messaging service.

But the company had some good news to announce, this week airing "BBX", its next generation BlackBerry operating system, at its DevCon keynote address.  The new operating system supports both native and web apps.

On the web app side, there's built in support for Android Java applications, much like the RIM Playbook.  This is critical as it gives new BlackBerries access to literally hundreds of thousands of new apps.  HTML5 web apps are also fully supported.

On the native apps side, there's a new Native SDK.  There's a new GUI SDK -- Cascade UI with support for 3D animations and more.  RIM is offering support for 100 commonly used open source libraries, including the popular multithreading library POSIX.  And for native apps RIM is also adding new deep integration to the company's push and BlackBerry Mail (BBM) services.

Adobe Inc.'s (ADBE) Flash and Air apps are fully supported.

The new operating system will be available on new BlackBerries and will be available as an OS upgrade for the PlayBook and future tablets.  An early build is available via the "BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 Developer Beta."

The base code of the operating system comes from QNX, the OS currently used in the RIM PlayBook, but borrows literally from RIM's own BlackBerry OS.  QNX was first released in 1982 by a fellow Waterloo firm, and was purchased in 2004 by Harman International Industries (HAR).  Then in 2010 RIM scooped up the OS-maker, reaching an agreement to buy it from Harman.

The new OS will be installed on both RIM's tablets and its BlackBerry smartphones.

Mike Lazaridis, President and Co-CEO at RIM, cheered the fruit of that acquisition, stating, "With nearly 5 million BlackBerry apps downloaded daily, our customers have made BlackBerry one of the most profitable platforms for developers.  At DevCon today, we're giving developers the tools they need to build richer applications and we're providing direction on how to best develop their smartphone and tablet apps as the BlackBerry and QNX platforms converge into our next generation BBX platform."

Some employees and investors have recently expressed skepticism [1][2] about the leadership at RIM.  Nonetheless, with increasingly attractive hardware, and a reinvigorated OS effort, RIM just may have what it takes to pull off a turnaround.

I love it!!!

There are 6 people in this small thread calling you out on your BS... 6. So your answer is to post one persons comment that agreed with you from another article not even on the same subject matter (RIM) and say "You lost this time, again"

LOL. If that is the funniest thing you ever posted. Thanks for the morning laugh!

Haha like six mindless trolls mean anything? Hahaha come on man, is that all you got?

I mean trolls are trolls, there's nothing new here, I call out JM on his dumb anti-RIM trolling and mistakes in his post, and these trolls tell me I'm a dick? Great! I expected trolls to come in here and telling me I'm dick, 'cause I'm usually the only one noticing errors and inconsistencies in JM's trolling. Not like I expected these guys to tell me where I'm wrong and why, they can not offer anything contradicting my FACTS, that's the point.

So they are calling me dick instead because they are angry that they can not do anything about those facts.

I like the fact that only trolls calling me names support you, this is telling! If I post some facts here in whatever thread and some troll does not immediately attack me by calling names I start to think maybe my facts were wrong or something?

Like some dork says "Apple is doomed!!!" and I say "wait a sec, how come they are doomed when their quarter reports show constant growth" and then immediately those "six trolls" of yours come in and start calling me dick.

This is nice, my FACTS GOT THEM, they started yelling and crying 'cause they can't counter my arguments WITH ANY FACTS OF THEIR OWN! This is fun, don't you see?

What fact? The graph I showed you has declines in other regions too. Like we talked about before it went from 20% down to 16% then up to 18% in Europe. I see that as down 2% (from 20 to 18) and you see it as up 2% (from 16 to 18). Neither is incorrect, my point is its down overall, yours is its up in most recent timeline.

I love the post above because it outlines your whole denial methodology. Ignore all the bad news, and take one slightly good news out of context and base your whole argument on that minor piece ignoring the big picture. Then you insult people and call it a win LOL. Too funny.

I call you out on that and of course I am a troll because I disagree with you. Me, Jaguar investment group, wall street, most analysts, RIM employees, RIM stockholders, reviewers, smartphone industry insiders, and pretty much anyone that is paying a tiny bit of attention. We are all trolls. No, you arent in denial, everyone else is a troll (Pirks cries out from underneath his bridge)

Your graph showed increase in market share in Europe and other regions in the past 18 months, so technically the RIM market share is growing there recently, this is why I found JM's "ALL THE WORLD'S RIM MARKET SHARE IS FALLING EVERYWHERE" idiocy pretty funny. He's just spinning it to serve his agenda and I don't like unobjective reporting, that is all.

By retrospooty on 10/19/2011 1:34:37 PM , Rating: 2
I know this may be hard for you to understand but the implication is that overall its going down. This means when you add it all together as a whole its going down. No 1 said its going down everywhere. For you to quote Jason and put it in all caps is a bold face lie.

By Pirks on 10/19/2011 2:14:23 PM , Rating: 2
First there's no such proven implication, if the market share goes up in some areas and down in others - it's unproven that overall it's going down. Second the market is growing hence RIM sales grow globally too even if the market share declining (which is unproven again).

Yes, I know, we have been over that before... Thus the bet that you are too cowardly to take.

The bet: By October next year, there won’t be any way for RIM to hide behind creative data reporting and "pick and choose" facts . RIM’s numbers will be down all over , sales, marketshare, everything, everywhere and it will be undeniable.

I am done with this for now. What I have sucessefully done here in the past few weeks is exposed you for what you are. An agenda driven troll... and an angry little one at that. You ignore many facts you dont want to hear and exaggerate the few that support your agenda. Then you twist peoples words around and continue to argue against things they never said or even implied. Then you change the subject and have arguments that are totally unrelated and insult them for disagreeing with you and.or your style. You and I both know it, as does anyone that had the misfortune of reading our recent volleys. On top of all that, you slither out of the opportunity to stand behind what you say and bet on RIM's future prospects.

You sir, have been outed and pwned.

Lotsa hot air man :))) I'll watch JM's bias and negative spin on RIM anyway and correct him to make his negative spin more objective whenever I can.

Taking bets has nothing to do with unobjective reporting and putting a negative or positive spin depending on reporter's hidden agenda. Still, you may proceed with your chest thumping bets in a meanwhile, see if I care :P

He may report positive on Android and negative on RIM, but that is because Android is charging ahead and RIM is floundering and you know it. You call it "spin" becasue you dont like it, but it is what's going on in hte smartphone industry...

Furthermore, even if it is spun, he doesnt do like you and twist peoples words around and continue to argue against things they never said or even implied. Then you change the subject and have arguments that are totally unrelated and insult them for disagreeing with you. That's all you Pirks.

It's not about the fact that BlackBerry lost the US market share, it's about the fact that Mick all by himself decided that US equals world and started to lie about the world market share of RIM going down, which is UNPROVEN yet, because in some regions market share went up in the past 18 months. This is called bias, got it?

Mick just can't state the dry facts, he always adds some lunatic bullshit of his own to the facts, why? Because he's a click hunter, he's sold his soul for clicks and he trolls in his posts because he gets more clicks this way. You're a little child if you can't see and understand all this.

Get it now?

"RIM's market share slipping even globally - analysts"

""While the RIMM bulls have long pinned their hopes on international growth offsetting North America declines, this quarter largely defeated that thesis, as international revenues are now also in steep decline," Goldman Sachs analyst Simona Jankowski wrote in a note to clients.

Second-quarter revenue from international operations, excluding UK, fell 15 percent from the previous quarter -- proof that the decline in RIM's market share is not constrained to the U.S. and UK markets."

"RIM sold 11.9 million devices to end users in the third quarter of 2010, and its global share of the smartphone market fell to 14.8 percent. RIM's share of the overall North American market declined to 11.2 percent in the third quarter of 2010"

"Market share woes aside, the analyst calls RIM’s sharp decline in profitability the “biggest shock” among the bad news from yesterday’s earnings report. “It seems that operating margin dropped from 21% to 13%,” wrote Dediu in his post. “The company did incur some one-time charges for recent layoffs, but even without that charge, the margins would be around 16%."

"BlackBerry handset shipments in the fiscal second quarter were down 11% compared to the same quarter in 2010, and down 18% sequentially. “In terms of market share, we’ll have to wait for the competitor data over the next six weeks but the market has been growing at an average of 77% for four quarters so any continuation of this trend would imply RIM’s share dropping to single digits,"

By retrospooty on 10/19/2011 4:42:26 PM , Rating: 2
Oh, sorry, I missed a few good ones...

"Yet, RIM's management remains in "blatant denial," said Bernstein's Ferragu, who believes the company's outlook for the third quarter and the full year appears "unrealistic.""

"RIM’s net income plummeted by 60%, margins were squeezed, average selling prices of BlackBerry smartphones dropped and RIM managed to burn through more than half of its cash in a single quarter. Concerns are mounting, analysts are barking and RIM’s stock fell off a cliff in after-hours trading. Tossing yet another concern onto the pile, RIM’s global smartphone market share likely dipped into the single digits last quarter. Read on for more."

Graph here... Everything up except RIM and Nokia.

Yeah, first you show me the graph where market share grows in some regions and then next thing you show me the graph where shipments decline. How come they decline if in Europe and other regions the market share grew past 18 months according to your other graph?

Besides, market analysts also spell doom and gloom for Apple these days because Apple "underperformed". Yeah very strong argument those analysts who bash Apple and everyone else. This is their job to bash, they get paid for that, so no need to sell me all this stuff. I wanna see next quarter report and compare, see if BB7 changed anything from negative trends to positive ones, then I'll have the answer to whether RIM is really in permanent decline or it was just a dip caused by the BB7 delay for 6 months or so.

OMG, why do you keep trying? RIM just announced its Q2 results a few days ago. Are you that dense not to look at the dates? This is the latest data that didn't exist on the previous graph. This is the trend I was TELLING YOU WOULD HAPPEN and you couldnt accept it. It's RIM's data, not alalysts. Some of it is analysts take on RIM's data, but hte data is from RIM, the data showing worldwide decline came from RIM. This is the "there won’t be any way for RIM to hide behind creative data reporting and "pick and choose" facts." part coming to fruition you daft idiot.

pwned again... Or are you going to keep trying? Your just making yourself look foolish at this point. =)

Yeah I'm not into chest thumping bets like you, I prefer to pwn trolls. This is different business you know. I have no idea if QNX will save RIM, I just find it childish to bury any business alive and kicking. Until the company goes bankrupt there's always chance for coming back. This is true not for RIM only, this is about any business out there.

I've seen soooo manyyy people burying Apple alive in my days, soo many of them, that your burying of RIM just looks stupid now. After Apple was "buried" same people started to bury MS, now it's RIM's turn, after RIM they will bury Nintendo, after Nintendo they will bury Sony or someone else, doesn't matter. Burying trolls never stop burying, they can't live without it.

While you're regurgitating old "news" here about RIM staff cuts a few months ago people have converted a whole ton of useful android apps like skype into PlayBook bar files, all tested and ready to go to the masses once the OS 2.0 beta turns into the release.

This quick almost exponential overnight growth of PlayBook apps catalog will be ignored by trolls like you and JM. You'd much rather share here bad news from a few months ago instead of a good news from yesterday. This tells everything about who you really are. I can see through you troll!

The links show that in fact some analyst somewhere said "we believe this trend is starting to spread to international markets" - yeah ok they believe that, I believe this and not that, so what? Why should I believe some shady analyst when I can make conclusions based on my own rationale? If you're telling me I have problems because my BELIEFS are different from that analyst BELIEFS well you'll need some councelling then.

I judge RIM not by beliefs but by facts. You showing me links where some analyst "believes" something he chooses to believe does not change anything. Why are you even regurgitating some analyst beliefs again and again? I told you I need facts and not analyst beliefs.

By retrospooty on 10/20/2011 3:09:36 PM , Rating: 2
Hello... Read the articles. Its not based on beliefs... What the analysts think will happen next is based on beliefs. The #'s were released by RIM, as all companies do each quarter. The #'s show worldwide declines. At some point you are going to have to admit it.

"I judge RIM not by beliefs but by facts"

ROFLMAO!!!

Too funny. You "judge" RIM by pure fantasy.

By Pirks on 10/20/2011 3:23:50 PM , Rating: 2
Well, I've seen the numbers from RIM this summer and this fall that say this:
1) Revenue in the first quarter of fiscal 2012 grew 16% over the same quarter last year
2) International revenue in Q1 grew 67% year over year
3) The BlackBerry subscriber base grew 40% year over year to surpass 70 million
So let me judge RIM by these numbers in addition to your persistent trolling, okay? Just to stay more objective and unbiased. You don't mind, do you?
