IPhone 4S pre-orders began Friday, October 7

The iPhone 5 was a long-awaited follow-up to the iPhone 4, but when Apple made its official announcement last week, many customers and investors were disappointed to find out that an iPhone 4S would be this month's newest mobile release. But that didn't stop Apple from achieving one million iPhone 4S pre-orders within the first 24 hours of pre-order availability.

The problem many had with the news of the 4S was the relatively few changes made since the iPhone 4 -- especially in the realm of external changes. A few notable internal changes would be a dual-core A5 processor, iOS 5 mobile operating system, the Siri voice recognition assistant, an 8MP camera and compatibility across GSM and CDMA networks.

Despite complaints from customers and investors, technical analysis company UBM TechInsights predicted that the iPhone 4S would provide healthy profit margins comparable to prior iPhone releases.

From the looks of it, they were right -- Apple announced that it topped one million iPhone 4S pre-orders within the first day of making pre-orders available.

"We are blown away with the incredible response to iPhone 4S," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. "The first day pre-orders for iPhone 4S have been the most for any new product that Apple has ever launched and we are thrilled that customers love iPhone 4S as much as we do."

What likely helped Apple out is the addition of Sprint as an iPhone carrier. It was discovered back in August that Sprint, for the first time, would sell the iPhone come the newest release in October. Not only that, but it would be the only carrier to offer unlimited plans for the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, giving it an edge over AT&T and Verizon.

IPhone 4S pre-orders began Friday, October 7. The iPhone 4S will be available October 14.

Your a douche.

Some people just buy it because it looks nice and works good. It doesn't have to be the best thing on earth, its a cell phone. If thats good enough for some people, then thats fine, and it doesn't mean their retarded. Get over yourself. It might help you to go pick up some Massingill, you anti apple troll.

I never said they were "idiots" or "retards" you're putting words in my mouth. A lot of my friends own Iphones.

Obviously these people aren't paying the Apple premium because they just want a "cell phone that works good" as you put it. There are much cheaper alternatives if that were the case. Most of these people are buying them because of the brand image and because their friends/coworkers own Iphones and are telling them how awesome they are. Doesn't mean they are idiots or retards. Kind of like people who smoke because they think it's cool. They just lack independent thought.

Umm it's a turn of phrase, not literal. Do you really think i believe Apple is serving up bowls of poo and people are eating them? No it cannot be proved because even if there were a survey asking people why they paid more money for their Apple product instead of the competition's usually superior, or better value product, NO ONE would admit they bought it just to look cool.

Secondly, HOW DO YOU KNOW HOW WELL IT WORKS? There are zero reviews out at the moment. How do these one million people know that they are buying a reliable, quality phone?? For all we know it could be another, "YOU'RE HOLDING IT WRONG" fiasco.

I'm with you Breathless! I do not understand these people who are under the impression that what they coin as iSheep would just purchase whatever Apple releases due to brand name alone.

Apple wouldn't have done so well in the first place if they didn't have a great product. It's not always about the brand, it's about the whole package.

I've had Bada and Android phones. I got to play around the SGSII earlier today... I guess no more of those. I'm going Apple this time around. First timer, and definitely not about the brand.

Locking yourself out of a product is as bad as buying it thoughtlessly.

Apple haters and Apple fanboys are the same to me.

During the years a used Symbian, Blackbery, Windows Mobile and Android. Countless rom flashes and even a little rom development. Now I'll have an iphone. Next year I'll buy something else if I want.

So you're admitting that people who preorder a phone from Apple are the type of people who don't read or care about reviews, and just want to be the first people on their block with the shiny new Iphone, and rely on brand name and history for reliability and quality, rather than independent reviews?

Tell me your age. Seriously, I would like to know.

If you are any younger than 18, then I will not argue with you anymore, because I would understand.

If you are older than 18, then unfortunately for me I feel compelled to try and instill some sense into you.

By your posts, I would assume you are under 18 as well.

Does the $200 price even matter anymore? If that is the limiting factor, then go visit cricket.

I love the irony here. I find it amusing that in your spastic series of retorts you berate those who make purchase decisions on the basis of aesthetics, immediately object when people put words in your mouth, yet you can speak for them and their buying criteria. Guess what, your "novel" idea of independent thought isn't so independent. You are the guppy. Some 15 years ago Apple was against the establishment, was a marginal portion of any market space, and arguably had platforms that were better in some segments, yet they were not popular. You are not the only person to have had that thought. And yet you fail to have tolerance for a company or people that choose to support it. You, despite any acknowledgement have benefited. Here's a little history lesson:

In 2007 the debut of the LG KE850 aka Prada, released with an abhorrent price tag, was one of the first full touch screen phones in the world. Three months later Apple's iPhone came out, albeit with a similiar price(only to be drastically cut) and was in every measure superior. Not marginally superior, down right several product generations superior. Revolutionary was the buzz word. Guess what happened with the Prada?

With that effort, Apple bought brand loyalty, and a monetary commitment from the consumer so that they can continue to push the envelop. That wheel has been turning ever since. Not only to Apple's benefit but LG, HTC, etc. The consumation of ideas: multitouch, a touchscreen that actally functions, genuine web browsing, streaming video from the web on handsets, applications on phones, and now voice command applications will be in every single smart phone in the world. So spare me your angst, your intolerance, your ignorance. If those phones truly are better than it should be easy to convince your friends to switch despite alienating them with your propensity as a pompous douche, which you have so aptly presented here.

Huh. I was thinking that 5 minutes worth of research would show them that the alternatives can be varied and confusing. They can buy the newest model of the phone they have used and loved. All their existing apps and the like are just a sync away. Easy peasy.

No worrying about which update comes out when on which carrier. No touch wiz vs. blur or the like. No need for 'rooting' or 'ROMS'. No having to watch a slightly better model of the same phone they just bought come out a month later. Freedom of choice is sometimes freedom from confusion and frustration.

Wow. You really aren't helping with his initial statement. You're an example of the typical ifan. Yes, it's a cell phone and that's fine and many people, yes, they're retarded.
There are many many Apple fans out there that will order whatever new phone comes out regardless of contract cancellation fees just to be the first to have the newest gadget. They can even release a phone that's made of real crap and they'd still sell that many. That's just the Apple way.
