Samsung's latest smartphone is a specs monster

Samsung offered a brief teaser of its upcoming Google "flagship" smartphone earlier this week. The Samsung Galaxy Nexus (previously known as the Nexus Prime) will be the standard bearer for Google's Ice Cream Sandwich mobile operating system.

Today, Boy Genius Report (BGR) is revealing the full specs of the Galaxy Nexus that will be unveiled next Tuesday:

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich
9mm thin
4.65-inch 1280 x 720-pixel Super AMOLED HD with curved glass
TI OMAP 4460 dual-core Cortex A9 processor clocked at 1.2GHz
1GB of RAM
32GB of built-in storage
5-megapixel camera on the back, 1.3-megapixel in the front
1080p HD video capture support
LTE/HSPA depending on carrier
Wi-Fi a/b/g/n
NFC
1,750 mAh battery

According to BGR, the Galaxy Nexus will at least initially be tied exclusively to Verizon's wireless network. BGR also notes that since this is a Google Experience device, you won't have to worry about dealing with TouchWiz getting in the way.

I'm sorry, but that just reinforces OP's point. Here's a 8MP pic I took (for a "found dog" poster) in 2005 with my then 8MP DSLR (Canon 20D). I picked this pic because (1) it was similar in composition to yours, (2) the camera was 8 MP, and (3) it was a JPEG straight from the camera (I normally shoot RAW). No additional processing has been applied.

You can see how much clearer and more detailed it is than your smartphone pic. That is the OP's point. The 8MP pics you get from phone cameras and many digicams simply don't contain 8MP of information. The optics and small sensor are incapable of resolving that much detail. They're empty pixels added because marketing wanted a bigger number on the sales brochure. I'd have to scale down the cat pic by about 50% (2 MP) to make it look as clean as the dog pic.

To demonstrate that the optics in the point and shoot/camera phone can't generate 8 MP of data.

His entire point was to compare to a DSLR. Look at both photos at 100% zoom and notice which camera is capable of using all 8MP and which one is not. The point being that small optical sensors on camera phones are not advanced enough to use all 8 megapixels (limited aperture, ISO and shutter speed). If you were to take that cat picture and reduce it to 5-6 megapixes, it would only then begin to resemble the quality of what you get on a DSLR at the full 8MP. Conclusion: megapixels on phones are just a number and a marketing gimmick.
