Approximately 200 fake iPhones were discovered during the arrests

Selling fake Apple products has become a bit of a trend this year. Over the summer, over 22 unauthorized Apple retailers were discovered in Kunming, China and two stores in New York were found selling fake Apple accessories. Apple, of course, went after all of them for trademark infringement.

Now, five individuals have been arrested in Shanghai, China for building and selling fake iPhones according to Reuters.

The five people arrested were part of an organized gang that purchased the components needed to build the fake iPhones from Guangdong, China, then built them in Shanghai apartments and sold them in unauthorized markets.

According to Chinese police in Shanghai, approximately 200 fake iPhones were discovered during the arrests. The fake versions had all of the same functions as a real iPhone with the exception of a shorter battery life.

"It's really hard for customers to distinguish the fake ones from the genuine ones," said a police officer involved in the arrests.

According to Reuters, a fake iPhone costs about $313 USD (2,000 yuan) to make, and are sold for about 4,000 yuan on the illegal markets.
