Enthusiasts are eager to get their hands on Windows 8, even in unfinished form

We reported yesterday that Microsoft made its highly anticipated next generation operating system, Windows 8, available to the public. The Windows 8 Developer Preview is available in three versions:

  • Windows Developer Preview with developer tools (x64)
  • Windows Developer Preview (x64)
  • Windows Developer Preview (x86)

AllThingsD is now reporting that 500,000 copies of the Windows 8 Developer Preview have been downloaded since last night. “We still have a long way to go with Windows 8,” said Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. “Our approach to these new opportunities is centered in Windows. It’s not about doing something else. It’s about broadly re-imagining Windows.”

Ballmer also noted that Microsoft isn't going to be favoring Intel or ARM when it comes to processor choice for Windows 8. Instead, Ballmer notes that, “It’s going to be Intel and ARM.”

If you haven't already download the Windows 8 Developer Preview, you can grab it here.

Shortcomings i would like to see corrected:

1. I love regular desktop because of the background pictures i can put in there. We NEED to be able to set background pictures in the metro start screen (same would apply for WP7)

2. I don't like the fact that the desktop is now like an app and the start button no longer gives you a start menu. Start screen is nice but I like also having a long list of all my apps and docs, like WP7 or OSX's launch pad.

3. I would like to chose to start on the desktop view by default, for my desktop.

4. Freaking taskbar is the best thing in the world, and i would like it in metro by doing a down swipe at the bottom of the screen.

I also which my tablet PC didn't die this summer.
Nobody pointed out that all this metro screen, when browsing your media at least, already existed in the form of media center??? I selected my songs, pictures and movies on live tiles like icons using my finger for years now.
