At this year's E3 Expo in June, Sony announced the PlayStation 3D Display, which is a new LED HDTV with 3D capabilities designed for PS3 gamers. Now, Sony has released the details of a new bundle available to those who preorder the 3D Display.

Those who pre-order will receive a 24-inch PlayStation 3D Display, one pair of Universal PlayStation 3D glasses, an HDMI cable, "MotorStorm Apocalypse" on Blu-ray and a copy of "Resistance 3" on Blu-ray as well. 

The price tag for this bundle is $499.99, and customers must place their order by September 30, 2011. 

"With the 3D Display pre-order offer and so many amazing titles coming to PS3 in 3D this holiday, like "Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception," "Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One," "The ICO & Shadow of the Colossus Collection," and more, now is the time to jump into 3D gaming," said Kim Nguyen, marketing manager for PlayStation 3. 

The PlayStation 3D Display features a 24-inch LED 3D display with full HD 1080p resolution and 240hz refresh rate. It is specialized for gaming with SimulView technology, which allows for a stereoscopic multiplayer display. There are 3 HD inputs (2 HDMI and 1 component) for your PS3, cable TV box and PC, and it offers built-in speakers as well as a subwoofer. 

The PlayStation 3D Display is due for release in November.

Size matters

Seriously, a 24" screen? As a gamer, there is no way this appeals to me whatsoever as a PS3 owner.

Who is the target market? The young gamer who can't afford it? The parents who won't want to spend $500 to make their brat shut up on a TV that dwarves anything else they have?

Count me out.

Great for those who play on a smaller screen in a bedroom and only sit a few feet away.

I have a smaller screen in my bedroom for gaming. It is a 32" Sharp Aquos 1080p TV that is a few years old.

Like someone else mentioned, at 24" it'd have to sit on my desk.

24 inches for a console monitor is terribly small. I thought the whole purpose for console gaming was the ability to sit on your couch while you play? 24 inches 8 feet away from you while sitting on a couch will hardly be an amazing, 3D experience.

Or, the players could decide to sit it on a desk and play it like a... Computer game? I fail to see the point in that. If you're going to compromise that much, just be a complete computer gamer then.

Now, if you do compromise like that, 24 inches is still small as ideally I'd go with a 27 inch screen to be drawn into the experience. This product sounds like a lot of hype but quite a bit of shortcomings. Then again, I've always thought being required to wear special glasses to experience a 3D experience a major shortcoming. For us people that wear glasses as it is, it's just asinine to then be forced to wear a second pair on top of the first.

The big selling point of this TV isn't that it is 3d, but that you can play 2 player simultaneously on it, and each player will have their own view.

Of course I have no idea how that would look to people watching the two guys play. But they are advertising it will replace split screen. Each side using the active shudder glasses gets an independent screen.

Interesting concept, but plenty of other negatives for the size/price.
