Nintendo sold 215,000 3DS systems between August 8 and 14 in Japan

Last month, Nintendo reported poor first-quarter financial results and blamed it on the fact that its new portable, the 3DS, did not sell as well as it hoped due to a lacking launch lineup. In fact, only 710,000 units were sold between April and June 2011, and in July, the total number sold came to 4.32 million. This was disappointing for Nintendo, who was hoping to sell that amount within the first few weeks of the 3DS' release in March 2011.

Along with the first-quarter financial results came the announcement that Nintendo was slashing the price of the 3DS from $249.99 to $169.99 starting August 12. Through this effort as well as the launch of a 3DS Ambassador Program, which allowed pre-price cut 3DS owners to receive free games via the Nintendo eShop, Nintendo was hoping to boost 3DS sales.

Now, it looks as if the price slash worked -- especially in Japan. According to Enterbrain, a video game magazine publishing house, Nintendo sold 215,000 3DS systems between August 8 and 14 in Japan. Reports noted that video game stores in Japan reduced the price of the 3DS a few days sooner than the set August 12 date.

For a one-week time period, this number is pretty significant considering Japan only sold 109,000 3DS systems in all of May. Now, Japan has sold a total of 1.5 million units since the 3DS' launch.

In other Nintendo-related news, a new streamlined Wii console will launch in the United Kingdom sometime before Christmas. According to the Official Nintendo Magazine, it will be a streamlined white Wii that is designed to sit horizontally rather than vertically. In addition, it will no longer play GameCube games and will not be compatible with GameCube controllers.

The new streamlined Wii will be part of a bundle consisting of the games "Wii Party" and "Wii Sport," and will include a Wii Remote Plus controller and Nunchuk.

Anybody with one?

Can anyone who owns one of these please tell me if you would buy it over the non 3d version?

My Daughter is asking for a new one because my other daughter has the DSi and wants to do the animations and camera stuff despite we all know the cameras on the DSi are horrible but to a kid they love it.

With the price drop I am considering getting her the 3d version although Im concerned about people saying they get a headache from it. Can anyone honestly comment about their experience with this over the DSi and if they would honestly buy it or the just get the DSi version?

I don't have one. But you can turn the 3d off completely. At this point, if I were to buy a new one, I would get the 3ds and not a dsi. Just my opinion.

You needn't worry about getting a headache- there is a slider that allows you to adjust the parallax, which you can slide down to zero. This turns off the 3D completely giving you effectively the same as the non 3D enabled version.

Please, for God's sake, learn how to use 'They', 'Their' and 'There" properly. You are giving me bigger headache than the 3DS could.

The 3DS is not just a 3D version of the DS and is not "the same" when you disable 3D. It's MUCH more powerful hardware. Did you really think it was the same as 2004's Nintendo DS?

I got one when it hit $200. I can play 4-5 hours without significant problems. You will notice it takes your eyes a second to adjust when you look away, but not a big deal.

The only problem is that the only game I want to play is Ocarina of Time (which is awesome). Considering how busy I am, hardly have time for that but as more good titles comes out I'll be trying to find time.

The problem is the game selection. There are very few 3DS games and not a 100% percent sure but I don't think the 3DS can play DS games someone correct me if I am wrong.

It can play DS games. The pixel counts are off for the lower screen so some of the details get squashed but it's backwards compatible.

if you're upgrading from a ds/ds-lite, totally worth it, imho. still worth it if you're upgrading from a dsi/xl (although why you wasted $$$ on that, i have no idea).

my tri-force ds-lite is still my fav. i much prefer GBA compatibility > camera. my NES-edition GBA-SP is also a fav though. I have both because the SP works with ALL GB titles. I'll probably ditch the ds-lite eventually for a 3DS though.

p.s.

can we get a Wii converter for GBA/DS titles already? the only reason i still have my GCN is for the GBA player (well that, and there's strangely a couple games that don't play on wii).
