When most techies think of McAfee,
they think of pre-installed Windows bloatware, wasted CPU cycles, and costly
subscription services. However, the company also has a portfolio of software products
that target smartphone users.
McAfee's latest software release comes in the form
of WaveSecure iOS
Edition. The WaveSecure app can be installed on Apple iOS devices (iPhone,
iPad, iPod touch) and is aimed at backing up a user’s important personal
information in the case of theft or accidental damage.
“We are excited to extend our platform coverage
to one of the most popular operating systems for mobile devices on the market,”
said Todd Gebhart, co-president, McAfee. “Consumers use their mobile devices to
hold some of the most important details of their life. McAfee WaveSecure software
works seamlessly to secure, back up and wirelessly restore content on the
device via the online portal. So even if the device is lost, stolen or damaged,
or even if users accidentally delete their data, the data remains safe and
easily accessible.”
McAfee claims the app "wirelessly back up
contacts, photos and videos as well as remotely track the location of their
iPhone."
If this functionality sounds familiar, it's
because most of this functionality is either already available (or will soon be
available) for iOS. ICloud
is currently in beta testing and will be available with iOS 5, which is
launching this fall -- it will backup photos, documents, apps, books, contacts,
calendar data, and will also track the location of your iOS devices. ICloud
will also perform full device backups and give users 5GB of storage space for
free.
If you for some reason have a problem with
"free", McAfee is offering WaveSecure iOS Edition for $19.95 at the
Apple App Store.
