Apple has become a force to be reckoned with over the last decade. As far as competition goes, Android is the leader in the mobile market, but Apple is slowly eliminating the competition through a series of lawsuits against Android device makers. In fact, Apple has managed to ban the sale and marketing of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Australia and the European Union. 

Now, Apple can add another notch to its belt as it defeats a digital music store rival -- Walmart's MP3 Music Downloads Store.

"After eight years in business, the Walmart Music Downloads Store located at mp3.walmart.com will close on August 28, 2011," said a certified letter shared with Digital Music News, a music industry website. "All content in the store will be disabled and no longer available for download from the store. The sale of physical record music products on Walmart.com as well as in Walmart U.S. retail store will remain unaffected. Walmart Soundcheck (soundcheck.walmart.com) will remain operational as a live streaming site without any download options."

Walmart originally launched its MP3 store in 2004 to directly compete with Apple's iTunes store. While the retail giant's considerable reputation and pull allowed it to offer music tracks for lower prices than iTunes (for instance, if iTunes sold a track for 99 cents, Walmart would sell it for 88 cents), Walmart couldn't compete with Apple's integration of iTunes with its newest mobile devices.
