Boeing has been working diligently on its new 787 Dreamliner passenger jet despite several delays. Now, Boeing and All Nippon Airways (ANA) are launching the first 787 Dreamliner that will enter into service.

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is the first mid-size airplane to fly long-range routes, allowing airlines to open non-stop routes for travelers. It features a range of technologies that offer a new kind of comfort for passengers, such as larger windows with electrochromic shades, LED lighting, larger onboard luggage bins, touch-panel in-flight entertainment screens, cleaner cabin air, higher humidity and lower cabin altitude (to help passengers feel less affected by certain flying conditions). In addition, the 787 Dreamliner is more fuel efficient due to modern engines and advanced aerodynamics, and requires lower operating costs.

Boeing announced the assembly of the 787 in 2003. As time went on, the aircraft experienced several delays due to problems with suppliers and the advanced materials used in the Dreamliner's construction. A fully assembled 787 Dreamliner made an appearance in 2007, and it took its first flight in 2009. In early 2010, it completed its "initial airworthiness" testing only to experience an electrical fire later in the year.

But these problems are in the past, and Boeing has proudly released the 787 Dreamliner that will be entered into service. This first 787 provides a short-haul international design featuring economy and business-class cabins. 

"Our teams are making outstanding progress in completing the first airplane to be delivered and achieving certification of the 787," said Scott Fancher, vice president and general manager of the 787 program. "We are inspired by the airline's enthusiasm for this airplane and look forward to the day when we make our first delivery to ANA."

Mitsuo Morimoto, ANA senior executive vice president and member of the board of directors, said that ANA's passengers will be the first to experience the unique environment the 787 Dreamliner provides, and that they surely will not regret this method of travel.

Boeing hopes to deliver this first 787 to ANA in September 2011, where ANA will first fly it as a charter international flight from Tokyo to Hong Kong.
