HP webOS Update: "Now Your TouchPad is Even More Like Nothing Else"

HP continues to struggle to find its way in the market, despite a small contingent of loyal fans
Hewlett-Packard, Comp. (
) is struggling, to put it mildly, in the mobile device sector. Its latest efforts to revive the dying Palm brand have been met with largely public apathy and have posted abysmal sales. Similarly, HP's
webOS tablet, the TouchPad,
received lukewarm reviews
and managed to gain
less than 1 percent of the total market
according to recent statistics. HP is looking now to
license its webOS operating system
to rival manufacturers in a last ditch bid to stay relevant.
Now HP has released the second update to webOS 3, release 3.0.2. The newest iteration of the OS contains a number of small updates which should make the user interface on the TouchPad feel a bit more usable and responsive. Among the highlights are:
The Email app offers faster scrolling and improved image rendering, as well as improved management of multiple emails in Draft and Outbox views
You can now set your wallpaper from photos in the Photos app
In the Calendar app, you'll notice improvements in layout, searching for events with Just Type, and more
Can't live without "can't"? You'll appreciate enhancements in autocorrection of contractions.
A full list of improvements is available
In a cringe-worthy example of marketing speak HP
[press release] that with the update, "Now your TouchPad is even more like nothing else."
Perhaps that wasn't the best choice of words when one of the main criticisms of the TouchPad is the buggy interface and lack of apps.
Of course, HP did inherit Palm's small contingent of loyal fans, many of whom bought TouchPads. For example, on HP's blog, "RussK" cheered, "Great work guys. Keep it up. Thank you for providing a great alternative to the Apple, google, and, in the future, Amazon environment; I like the usability freedom HP and webOS continues to provide."
For these users, the update may be music to their ears. For the rest of the tablet community it's just a humorous footnote.

Touchpad is already in trouble... in a few weeks?

Come on... it just hit the market and it may do better than Android... especially if HP can bring the price down to $400 or so.
But the TouchPad has other issues... Its ugly finger-print magnet back feels slimy rather quickly. Its feels heavier than my iPad1.
But the Aspect ratio of the screen (4:3) is nice, WebOS does very well - the browser is sharper than iOS 4.x. Remember folks, iOS5 comes out in a few months. Screen rotation is slow, but should improve with updates.
HP should make a rubberized or some other non-glossy crap back and sell it for something that'll make people buy it. Its easily not as "sexy" as the iPad 1 or Galaxy Tab 10.1 (stupid name).
I'm open to not getting an iPad3 - but so far, the choices all have some issues. RIM, not interested in.
Android Galaxy or ThinkPad... looking good - but they are 16:9 which for what I need and want, is not acceptable.
*I DON'T NEED A PORTABLE VIDEO PLAYER!!*
I'll take the black bars on iPad any day, looking at photos, reading eBooks and websites is better on a iPad with 4:3.
WebOS is mostly good... don't care for the setting window and how it multi-tasks the settings, its way more finger work than the others. But the hardware is like a cheap iPad1 clone that feels like cheap junk. I'll take the few scratches to have a nicer feeling product.
While apple using the non-standard connector is kind of a bad thing, when it comes to accessories and cables, that wider connector is a LOT LOT easier to deal with than the mini-USB on Android and other devices (I use them every day)... I didn't know how much they sucked.
I wish HP luck... but they have a lot of haters and unless Android gets killed by Apple, finding others to use their WebOS will be difficult. Perhaps they can call ASUS?
