Leaf price increases by thousands for 2012  (Source: Nissan)
Prices go up significantly for Leaf

Of all the green cars on the road today, the two that get the most attention tend to be the pure electric Nissan Leaf and the Chevy Volt, which is classified as a plug-in hybrid. The two cars are selling well and it looks like the price will be increasing for the 2012 model year on both of the vehicles.

Nissan has announced that the price on the Leaf will go up significantly in both base trim and SL trim for 2012. The base Leaf will see its price rise from $32,780 to $35,180. The SL will see an even larger price increase going from $33,720 to $37,250. Nissan also announced that it would up the lease price of the Leaf slightly to $369 monthly from $349 monthly for the 2011 model year.

Brian Carolin, senior vice president, sales and marketing for Nissan North America said, "Many enthusiastic consumers have eagerly anticipated ordering a Nissan Leaf of their own, and now we can make zero-emissions mobility a reality in more markets." He also noted, " In response to direct feedback from Nissan Leaf owners, the features that customers want most will come standard on the 2012 Nissan Leaf — including quick charging and cold-weather features."

The quick charge feature allows the Leaf to be hooked to a 480v charger. That allows the Leaf to recharge in 30-minutes from a dead battery to 80% capacity. The cold weather gear includes a battery heater, heated seats, and a heated steering wheel.

GM is also offering pricing details on its 2012 Volt. The base Volt for 2012 will have a price of $39,995 including the $850 destination charge. In 2011, the Volt started at $41,000. The Volt with navigation and Bose sound is rising in price by $990 compared to 2011 models.

In June, GM reports that it sold 2,745 Volts while Nissan reports selling 4,400 Leaf EVs.

Nissan is also already putting thought into what to do with Leaf batteries when the cars reach the end of their usable life.

If I'm in a position where I can pay $30+ K for a vehicle- then I'm definitely considering options; and paying less than 3-5k extra for a model with options I would want anyway isn't such a horrible proposition.

With that being said, I'm not a fan of the way Nissan prices options. It always felt like they cost more than any other manufacturer without extra benefit once I considered extras. After testing a Ford Sync system vs Nissan's voice activated system a few years back, I had no doubt that sync was superior, and it came at a lower price.

I just don't see how they can justify these price hikes on such a gimmick item in a down economy. Especially given it's poor sales to date. Around 4k units? That's just terrible. They need to realize they do NOT have a winner here, and price hikes will only make it worst.

Nissan should just accept that they are going to have to sell these at a loss for a few years until they get enough market saturation to start making a profit. Honda and Toyota understood this with the hybrids when that technology was in it's fledgeling years.

Of course, there are the subsidies, but I think we've covered that enough and everyone knows where I stand on that.

By the way, isn't it freaking awesome that despite Chevy's massive PR campaign and all the billions of taxpayer dollars, the golden child Volt is being outsold almost 2 to 1 to the all-electric Leaf? Just, lol.

The Leaf has a pretty good advertising presence, too, and it's cheaper - even after this price hike. But both manufacturers say that supply is holding sales back more than anything at this point. The pure electric should be easier to produce once they ramp up. The Volt is a complex beast to build and will probably have a harder time ramping up.

Not really.

GM sells every single Volt that they make right now. Plus there is a backlog of customers that ensures they've sold ever single one for over the next year. GM is ramping up production, but right now is very comfortable where they stand.

As for the Volt itself, it truely is a nice car. Not my cup of tea, by any means, but a very nice car that's quite fun to drive. My only disappointment was when they changed the styling to ho-hum everyday commuter car and didn't have the balls to keep with the original prototype.

After the backlog is pushed out the door what next? GM has been very slow in bringing up production this year. Next year they are supposed to make more than double what they made this year and they will fill all of the pre-orders. Will the sales continue to rise?

They never do. Seems that making an attractive car (like most prototypes) is against the rules somehow. Yeah the original was good looking, they made the production version look just short of Blah.

The prototype was more aerodynamic going backward and forward. Its proportions made it obvious it wasn't a practical vehicle.

Maybe the production version doesn't look like the concept, but the Volt still makes the Leaf and Prius look like Fischer price toys.

Camaro arrived pretty much unchanged from the prototypes. I had hope the Volt would be similar.

GM has purposefully made initial production slow as a quality improvement. They are building as many Volts as they said they would before production started and have a backlog of orders for every one they are going to build in the near future.

Your disdain for the Volt is baffling. It's a product of complete technological superiority, produced here in the States. It's nice to be on the cutting edge for once, and I'm glad GM isn't just producing pushrod 3100's and 4-speed automatics.

All I know is that IF you are an American and you buy ANY other brnad of car besides American (Ford, Chevy, Dodge, etc etc) then you are a no-good traitor and need to be deported to whatever country you bought the car from. We have very few choices in the product world where there is an American alternative, ALWAYS buy American if you are American. End of story, anything you counter with is irrelevant. Don't be a moron, keep your country alive!

If you buy American just because it is American and not the best you can buy, then you are just a part of the problem why Corporations like GM continue to produce junk, after all people like you will buy it.

I am all for buying US made, but I will not buy crap because it is US made over something that is better and made somewhere else.

These are just money suckers, over priced and not very good bang for your buck.
Since cars are not an investment in the first place, these are the complete opposite - a money waster.

These are for - wait for it ----- "The first adopters"!
And has been pointed out before, we need these people. (??)

And and my 401k needs a million dollar addition too, but that won't happen.

When they have the masses wanting to buy them, then they'll have acheived something. Right now only those with money to spare can buy.

Yes, we need those type of people lol. They are partly what is driving the forward momentum of whatever the product is. Performance cars, Luxury cars and need I mention computer and gaming? All the rest of us have to do is wait and complain less.

There is no way these cars will be mainstream anytime soon with these added features that should have been included, jacking up the price. I sure hope gas prices don't too high cause most of us can't buy new cars & if we could certainly wouldn't buy these overpriced boxes, but I guess that's how technology goes. The early adopters always pay more. I am more concerned with what can be done that maybe our country should have done decades ago to bring down the cost of of gas, as for 1997 Honda Civic, & 2006 Mitsu Lancer Ralliart, there are no other alternatives, there certainly are no alternatives for the masses vehicles in this bad economy. My gas bill for both run $150-190/month & climbing, & my commute is 28miles oneway, & any increses in gas takes money away from paying my student loan, or my daughter's tuition which just keeps going up, so I am really concerned. There is no such thing as the American Dream for most as no matter what most of us can't seem to get ahead.

Worse than that, they're charging extra to add standard features that not everyone is going to need or want. I'm pretty sure that people in Houston or Phoenix will use their heated seats quite often! (eye roll)

Just another reason why I would never consider either the Leaf or the Volt.....boondoggles that they are!

Most of the people are this thread are remarkably ignorant.

The real "addition" is the battery heater. The Nissan Leaf has an -aircooled- battery. Without a battery heater, this "feature" may significantly affect performance in Cold or Hot Weather in comparison to the Liquid Cooled Tesla and Volt batteries. Of course, the battery heater doesn't really help Hot Weather performance at all...

The second addition is a tacit admission that most consumers are afraid of Range Anxiety. Quick Charging capacity takes the maximum "fill rate" for new mileage from .25 miles/minute to 2 miles/minute. Pretty good... but the Volt (and any other Gas Car) are still way up at over 100 miles/minute.

Has anyone here kept track of sales of the Volt so far?

Are there more sales to the general public or to Government and Fleet accounts? Even counting the backlog of all the customers who are waiting, I am betting that there will be more government and fleet deliveries in the next 2 years than sales to Joe Six Pack.

Or, you're paying basically the same price that you would have paid anyway, only you don't have to haggle over adding features that should have been standard in the first place - or worry about getting a lower-end model that nobody was buying anyway.

I'm always a fan of making a lowest-possible-featureset model available, but if they truly were having the VAST majority of people buy certain features, might as well make them standard. Toyota did that to the Prius, too - a few times.

Like I need cold weather features on a plug in that will stay on Florida highways. Nor do I care to shorten the usable life of my batteries by quick-charging them. They are doing what most car manufacturers do, they are bundling features needlessly in order to jack up the price to increase their profits.
