Comscore says Apple is number one in U.S. market share for a single manufacturer, though Android overall outnumbers it 1.5:1.  (Source: ComScore)

Apple's ranking is impressive, given that it's newest handset is over a year old.  (Source: Apple)
New study indicates Apple is the top single manufacturer, but there's a few disclaimers to consider

Internet data mining isn't the most accurate way to track smartphones, as it can be biased by usage patterns; that said it does give a decent rough estimate of market share.  Market research firm ComScore's latest internet traffic-based market share analysis delivers the controversial conclusion that Apple is the top single smart phone manufacturer in the United States.

Before proclaiming "Apple is #1!", it's important to point out that this is not a “by operating system” market share comparison.  If you combine the market shares of Motorola Solutions Inc. (MSI), Samsung Electronics Comp., Ltd. (SEO:005930), HTC Corp. (TPE:2498), and LG Electronics Inc. (SEO:066570) (11.4, 8.9, 11.8, and 4.8 percent, respectively) you get 36.9 percent, nearly 50 percent more than Apple's 26.6 percent.  Granted, those manufacturers also sell Windows Phone 7 handsets (Microsoft Corp. (MSFT)), but that market share is likely only a small percentage of that total.

It's also important to consider that Apple's worldwide sales are still lower than Samsung's and that it's being outsold nearly two-to-one by Android.  In other words, Apple is doing better in the U.S., where Android outsells it approximately 1.5:1, versus the world where Android outsells it approximately 2:1.

That said, Apple deserves plenty of credit for earning the top spot in this ranking -- especially since it only has two relatively old products, the iPhone 4 (12 months old) and iPhone 3GS (2 years old), on the market.

Other interesting observations are that despite all the doom and gloom surrounding Canadian smartphone maker Research in Motion, Ltd. (TSE:RIM), it still is maintain a sporty 24.7 percent market share.  It's also telling that Microsoft's favorite hardware partner, Finland's Nokia (HEL:NOK1V), could only muster a meager 2.1 percent market share.

And then there's Hewlett-Packard, Comp. (HPQ), who like Nokia is struggling.  HP earned just a hair more market share -- 2.7 percent.  However, unless its plans to license its smartphone OS to third-party hardware makers comes through big time, it seems to be condemned to a role as a bit player.

Apple, along with Microsoft are suing Android's top handset makers to force them out of the top spot -- or out of the market altogether.  And Apple is also eagerly awaiting the launch of a new iPhone in September, which is expected to be a relatively minor refresh.

Apple apple apple, seriously? At one time I was ignorant of fanboys. Didn't really think people held so much loyalty to a name brand they would resort to all kinds of actions to defend thief favorite name brand. I always knew about the dodge, ford, chevy fanboys fighting each other litery over trucks. It's wasn't till 2007 when I released console fanboys existed that would literally fight over a gad dam game console. If these people would met up they would in some cases resort to punching each other stupid over a plastic box that plays games. Apple was another thing I was ignorant to. Not the company but the fanboys. One of the first pcs I used was in jr high a apple Lisa 2. at that point I became very interested in computers and expanded my knowledge dramatically on the workings of computer hardware and software.
Personally I hold no loyalty to any name brand. I may buy a chevy tomorrow but in 5 years if ford makes the best truck I'll buy a ford. Same with computers if intel is king I buy intel if and is king I buy amd. I do the same with gpus, fish poles (even thou 90% chance it will be Penn)
, tools , ect.
With all this apple sucking you do , really what is mentally wrong with you. If anything I should be worried about apple as a company more then you since just a little over a Month ago I sold $43,000 in stock I owned in apple. Still have shares in the company. You know
What this means macdev I am an owner of the apple corp. And I don't suck the white stuff like you do. So you mention money? Really at the age of 29 I own 4 rent properties, my own land (22 acres urban) house , I still work as a ase certified master mech for my local municipal government. On top of that I day trade. But guess what all my money and asset means absolutely nothing to the fact that apple is not the greatest corp in the world like you think. People like you have my finger wanting to hit the sell button on the rest of my apple stock. The only apple products I ever owned has Been one iPod, iPhone 2g (first iPhone 8gig) ,iPhone white 3G 16gig , iPhone 4 32gig.
You know why I bought the iPhone because I liked the interface. But now look how many people make touch screen smart phones. Will I continue to buy iPhone maybe it depends. Will I get an iPhone 5? Not unless it's a real upgrade and not some bullshit like the 3GS was to the 3G. Point is apple can care less about you. They car more about me a non apple cult fanatic and why they love me more then you. Simple I invested in there company. So what I sold a grand total of 1/5 of my initial purchase of securities. At any rate enjoy your day and take apples reproductive organ put your mouth. O yea I am posting this on my iPhone 4 jailbroken why? Because I wanted controll of my phone not just what Steve wanted me to do.
